ariadne is every bit a princess, but that's because that was how she was born and raised. she's a well mannered young lady who tends to be very formal and courtly. alongside this comes a natural inclination to be kind, sweet and nice to all those she meets. she's not afraid to speak up when she needs to, but that doesn't mean she's an outspoken young lady, preferring to hold her tongue most of the time and almost seeming to be bashful.
on the reverse, however, being raised a princess has led to a lack of worldly knowledge, and ariadne can be quite naive and ignorant. this leads into a fairly insatiable curiosity and need to learn more about the world around her as she experiences it, refusing to let her own lacking get in the way of her own improvement. she can be a bit impulsive, following whimsies without much forethought, and in that way somewhat selfish, but not in a greedy way.

history
ariadne was born the middle child of five daughter to the king of farkhan and the first child of the king's second wife. and so she was treated to the life of a princess without the responsibility of one day becoming queen, letting her become spoiled and pampered by the courts and servants. all she had to worry about was becoming a proper young lady who would one day serve as a young noble's wife. once her father found an appropriate match.
yet ariadne was a dreamer inside, and she loved hearing the fairy tales and stories of adventures long past, lands far off, of knights and princes and all the romantics. of her sisters she was the most attentive of the stories their old nan told told them as she knit by the fireside in their youth, watching with dreamy eyes and an open heart.
so when she found out that there was a far off land where dragons existed, the thought of this land never left the edges of her heart. she learned what she could of woodkeep, but her father and her teachers were very tight-lipped about it, saying that it was a barbaric and uncivilized land and not the sort of thing a young princess should concern herself with.
needless to say ariadne wasn't even hearing these warnings, let alone heeding them. as she grew older she found ways to learn about it. she practiced their language in secret, learned of the different types of dragons and even found a woodkeep native or two who had traveled to farkhan unbeknownst to the guards. once or twice this led her into trouble, and so a special guard was assigned to keep her safe and prevent her from sneaking out.
knights and dragons and adventure was in her heart, however, and despite being rather unworldly, never leaving the comfort of the capital in farkhan, she longed to visit the far off land.
as she grew older she began to find more and more responsibilities. there were suitors looking for her hand in marriage, though her father thought none of them worthwhile, and she was expected to behave as a true princess should, representing her kingdom.
then her father found her match, a courtly young gentleman from a self-made family. he was entrepreneurial, intelligent and had a quicksilver tongue. everything about him seemed to be the ideal match for her, even his heart seemed in the right place! but the thought of being wed to the man turned her future into a grim reality for ariadne, and she knew if it happened she would never get to travel to woodkeep, to see the dragons.
so she took it upon herself to slip away from her guard and disappear into the night. she left the capital in a hurry, cloaked so as not to be noticed, and found herself passage with a trade caravan heading for the coast.
the world was a marvel to her curious heart! so many new things, she feared she might get herself kicked from the caravan while annoying the merchants with questions. they kept her on, however, because she paid well, and eventually found herself by the sea. once more she was marveled by the splendor of the open water.
finding voyage to woodkeep was much harder than she had thought it would be. since the kingdoms had banned trade with the island nation very few ships were going that way. she managed to barter passage on a fishing vessel that was heading in that direction, though it took the last of the money she had taken with her, since the fishermen weren't initially planning to make port on the island.
and so her voyage was set and she made her way across the ocean to woodkeep, the rogue princess.
