As she spoke, Damien bore deeply into her gaze with his own. He had to see if she was telling the truth or not, and by the looks of it she was being completely honest. She even corrected him by admitting that she'd killed a man before. Damien didn't know this man - nor did he want to - and he would leave it at that. "I see." was his only response for a moment, and he looked back up to the moon to let the information process. "I'm not here to prosecute you. I'm just here to ease your conscious, if truth be told." At this he stopped, looking back to Sky with a smile. A genuine smile at that. "Ereneth tells me to stop toying with you, and so I shall. I never meant to upset you, but I needed to gauge your reaction to my accusations in order to understand something. And now that I know, I can tell you why I've brought you out here."Then he sighed, running a hand through his messy brown hair. "I've been watching you for some time now, Miss Sky. In fact, I watched you ever since you first docked your ship on my island late one evening many years ago. I watched every egg you 'stole' and I believe from the bottom of my heart that every egg was truly a dud. We had suspicions about Lyroth's egg and I had considered placing it back with its clutch when you took it. Ever the curious one, I let things unfold as they did. Sky was ready for just about anything. She was ready to be yelled at, she was ready to be talked down to, she was ready to be prosecuted. Hell, she was ready to be executed on the spot, though she was certain the king wouldn't go that far with it. What she wasn't ready for was to find out her secret had never been that, that the king had known this entire time. She stared back for a long moment, her brain simply not comprehending what Damien had just said to her. Then it all clicked into place at once.
Suddenly she felt woozy, and swayed for a second on her feet. But she caught herself. She wasn't going to stumble that easily. She blinked herself back into focus and realized she was staring at him with her mouth half open, forgetting even to breathe for a second. "You . . . knew?" he murmured, mostly just to say the words out loud to confirm that they were possible. The sternness in his gaze was enough to tell her it was true.
Then came the smile. It was perhaps a bit more unsettling than the stern gaze, and as a woman who had, moments ago, been convinced she was about to die, she wasn't sure if the smile was any better. Such a warm and genuine smile when he just admitted to knowing her plight, to knowing everything she had done, and to having paid special attention to her. There were a variety of reactions going through her mind. She just grabbed for one.
"You mean you let me go all this time thinking I was dancing with death!" she exclaimed incredulously. Maybe not the reaction she would've picked, especially when talking with the king.

Annnnnnd there it was. Damien watched the girl grow light on her feet, and he stuck his arms out to catch her in case she fell. But she was stronger than most women her age and she caught herself, only to ask why and begin her rant on the subject. That much was expected, although he could only chuckle at her response. "Defensive, are we? And were I was thinking I'd just saved you some heartache."A sigh left his lips and he returned his arms to cross over his chest once more. "I'm sorry. I know I should have come to you sooner with this truth, but I wanted to make sure you were truly done with your pirate ways. How was I to know what you'd do with this knowledge? What if you up and left the island with Lyroth, only to cause me grief? No, I wanted to see you grow and blossom into the fine young lass you are now. It might have been rude of me to keep this from you, but I did it to protect my island. surely you can understand where I'm coming from as the king."He paused then, letting her take in what she wanted to hear from all of that. "I understand if you hate me for letting you carry this weight for so long...It was never my intention to cause you more pain. But the island is better with you and Lyroth here. She had realized as soon as the words had left her mouth how insolent they must've sounded. Were the king any stricter he'd probably have her lashed or something for addressing royalty in such an offensive manner. But this king, Damien, was much calmer. He almost expected it out of her, even though she hadn't even expected it from herself. Yet the words rang true, and when she realized this she found herself seething suddenly, a new anger flared up in her that he would let her torture herself day and night trying to keep it from being discovered when the most important authority on the island already knew.
And in her flare of emotion his words were met with defiance. And to top it off he threw in a feel-good statement? The island was a better place with her on it? The words were almost insulting because they held no truth in them. Her presence on the island didn't change a damned thing! Stormy eyes flashed with anger as her fists balled, but she wasn't about to attack the king. Not physically, anyway.
"I've torn myself up every day for the past two years. I sent my crew away the day Lyroth was born. The ship I captained, the ship that had been my home for several years, was cast aside for a new, uncertain life that could end at any time. It could be at the bottom of the ocean right now for all I know or care, I haven't seen hide nor hair of any of them since then. I threw away everything and thought I was risking my own life every day in order to do the right thing, and here you had all the answers? I just . . . I . . ." she growled, unable to form the right words and resulting toward angry sounds instead to voice her opinion.
Finally she threw her hands up in the air with resignation. "And why are you telling this to me now?" she demanded.

He listened to her with an open mind and an open heart. Damien had assumed she would be angry, but to raise her voice at him? It was almost comical. No one would dare speak to the king in such a way, but Sky wasn't in her right mind. It was alright; thankfully Damien was a king who really didn't want to be a king, and he preferred when people were real with him. He'd rather her show her true colors than hide behind a mask. "Are you not glad that you bonded to Lyroth? Are you not happy that you were able to leave your life of piracy behind? From my point of view, it appeared that you didn't like the business you had been forced into. Then again, I could be wrong." He began, walking down the path once more. Whether she chose to follow or to leave him in her own rage was up to her. "I don't know what you want from me. Had I told you sooner, you might have done something stupid like try to leave Woodkeep in your anger. That would only result in the death of your dragon."The male's one working eye looked up into the moonlight, and he sighed before continuing on. "Would it have been better, then, for me to keep this information to myself? We cannot think such things now, for it's too late. You know, and what you choose to do with this information is up to you. Either use it to better yourself, or let your anger and hatred consume you until death. I can't tell you what to do or to feel. Something in Sky's mind refused to let her understand it all. There were loose ends, things that refused to click into place no matter how much she tried to make them, to make the situation make sense! Her fingers dug into her palms as she quivered with anger she hadn't felt in a very long time, if ever. Yet what could she do about it? Aside from yell at the man causing it there was no other way she could get it out of her system, so she resorted to trying to make him feel her wrath.
"You think I would've left? Where would I have gone? And why do you think I would do that to Lyroth at all? Did it really take you two years to realize I wasn't going to run off and leave the dragon I had abandoned everything else for? I gave it all up in order to protect Ly, to raise him, and you think I would've flaked out on him?" she growled, an angry noise coming from her throat as she tried to find her voice, to not get to loud that others might come running but remain loud enough to be stern with him. To be stern with the king! She would definitely come to regret these actions once she had gotten over it.
Then something did come together in her mind and her tone shifted. Still angry, still accusing, but now she was actually directing something at him instead of just venting. "Why are you telling this to me now? What's changed that you've decided now is a good time? Is there something you want from me?"
