To say Sky spent a lot of time in the tavern would be an understatement, it was essentially where she could be found if she was not training or asleep in her bed. There were few occasions that would draw her away from there; typically they were other duties for the dragonriders, or else to spend some time with Lyroth. But Ly was a very independent dragon. The two were close, nearly inseparable, but that didn't mean physically. Each enjoyed their own time away from each other. She could still feel him nearby through their bond--if she needed him or if he needed her they could be beside each other in an instant.
That night she was drinking alone. Normally she'd work her way into a group somewhere in the tavern, laugh and joke around with perfect strangers and make easy friends. Normally she could be the center of attention and love it the entire time. That night, however, things were a bit different; namely, she was pooped. She had spent plenty of time practicing with a sword--a cutlass, to be more precise, which was lighter than the long swords they used here--however pirates did not demand the same discipline that the dragonriders did with the weapons. She ached all over and was just having a few drinks before she went to bed to recover from a hard day's work.
It didn't help that days like that reminded her much of her past life. During the first year she'd been on the water she'd engaged in active piracy, after all, had raided ships and fought men. She'd never killed them, she didn't have the stomach for that, but wielding a weapon again reminded her much of what she had done, and she needed the drinks to calm her nerves. That night wasn't about mirth or joy, it was about remorse, and she moped at the end of the bar away from the rest of the patrons. Her arms were crossed on the counter top and she had her head bowed, trying to tune everyone out and focus on locking away those painful memories.

He should have been at the castle, but he wasn't. Instead he was hanging out at the local tavern with the usual patrons who made the inn their home. Damien wasn't a normal king; instead of being 'better than thou' because of his status, he preferred to become friends with the people of his island. They were the ones who worked the land and helped fed him and his family, so it was only natural for him to want to be kind to them. Everyone on Woodkeep was like a giant family to him, and he only wanted the best for them all. But after a few rounds of drinks, the male noticed a lone figure sitting off to herself at the end of the bar. Someone looked like they were trying to drink their sorrows away. Damien, ever the optimist, excused himself from his table and walked over to sit beside the lone woman. He ordered a drink, hoping she'd respond. "Can you get my friend here a whiskey on the rocks? One for me too, if you please. Her drink is on me." Damien said with a smile, to which the bartender nodded before leaving to make the drinks. He turned to the lone girl then, nudging her with his elbow softly. "Hey, are you alright? You seem upset...and drinking away your sorrows isn't the best idea. Believe me, I know."MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS & THQ

Sky spent a lot of time at the tavern. She knew most of the regular patrons. The place was rarely visited by those looking to drink away sorrows so most of them were up for a good time when she was. Alongside this more intimate knowledge of the regulars came the flip side: she knew when someone wasn't a regular, when they were new to the bar. With her head buried in her arms she couldn't see who it was that was speaking, but the voice didn't sound like anyone she knew. There was a familiar pitch to it, but she'd heard a lot of voices in passing in her life.
With a silent groan she began to lift her head. Quiet protest started to escape her lips. "It's much appreciated, but I'm not in the mood for flirting tonight. Any other night and that might work--" her words were stopped dead as recognition flashed in her eyes. It took her a moment for the recognition to even click in her alcohol-addled mind, but it eventually made its way through the fog and she identified him for who he was. It took her another moment to believe that he was actually there and not just a figment of her imagination, someone the alcohol put in front of her.
"M-my lord!" she exclaimed, immediately straightening up her posture as best as she could. As she did her elbow knocked the empty mug over, and she fumbled to try and catch it while striking a salute. The whole debacle, of course, failed miserably and ended up with Sky landing on the floor. She scrambled to her feet, now striking a standing salute while her cheeks lit up a bright red. "I'm sorry, my lord, I didn't mean to be rude to you!"

At first, her response confused Damien. He wasn't there to hit on her...Was that what he sounded like? Gods above, his wife would have him hanged if she thought he was going out to the tavern to hit on younger women! But upon seeing her reaction, all he could do was burst out into deep laughter as the girl fell to the ground. Eventually she scrambled back up again to apologize, but the king simply waved a hand to dismiss whatever thoughts she was having. "Don't worry about it. I was a bit too casual with you, wasn't I? But then again, I prefer being casual over being...royal? Kingly? Whatever you want to call it. You said I was flirting, hmm? I didn't mean to intrude on your personal space, but I urge you to not drink when you're upset. It only leads to bitter feelings and an even worse tomorrow." Damien smiled, thanking and paying the bartender as she handed the glasses of whiskey on ice to him. He slid a glass her way, only to nod and sip his before speaking up again. "I know you. You're...familiar." And in fact he did know her; he knew what she had done and why she had decided to become a dragonrider. But he kept all these things to himself while in public. "You're...Sky. Sky Blue, right? I don't think I could forget a name like that. It's almost like a pirate's name!"MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS & THQ

Oh boy, she had just made a royal fool of herself . . . in front of royalty. Sky was used to having fun, and the idea of making a fool of yourself for a few good laughs wasn't foreign to her, but in front of the king when she was trying to salute him? Her cheeks were flushed and she hoped he assumed it was the alcohol and now her embarrassment. Though, then again, who would mistake the two after the show she had just put on for him. She wasn't going to live this one down, she just knew it.
But the king laughed heartily and responded casually. She blinked a few times, surprised by his informal manner. Sky's wit was sharp enough that she knew better than to try to keep up formal facade, she'd just go and make a bigger fool of herself. It was better this way anyway, she'd grown up a pirate, formal didn't come easy. "It helps take the edge off the bitter feelings," she murmured in response. She knew only fools drank away their sorrows, but for her it was more of a comfort blank. It was a familiar thing, so there was some comfort there. Plus it was a huge sleep aid; you didn't tend to have trouble passing out once you drank enough.
That all quickly became the furthest thing from her mind. She was about to pipe up, "Just Sky is fi--" when he dropped the implication. She tried her best to maintain a straight face, to hide her surprise at the blatant hint he had dropped, but it had caught her so off guard that it was impossible to disguise the darkening of her expression, the turn of her head to avoid eye contact and focus back on her drink. "Imagine that . . ." she muttered hotly, trying to keep a cool head about the situation. Not that it mattered. The king had just called her out as a pirate. She was screwed.

She seemed to loosen up when he did, which made Damien feel all the better about bothering her in the first place. This Sky girl...she was the one who had stolen all the supposed dud eggs before she became a dragonrider. Funny how fate worked in such a way. One minute she was stealing eggs, and the next she was stealing the heart of a dragon. But Damien continued to drink, watching said pirate look away when he mentioned her 'pirate-like name'. Did she knew that he knew? Probably not. And he wasn't mad either; as far as they were both concerned, she'd never done any real damage anyway. Plus, she never killed and never stole anything of value, so she was alright in the king's book. So long as she stayed that way; he had to admit he'd kept his eye on her ever since she'd Imprinted. "So Sky, what memories are you drinking away tonight? Come, tell me what ails you. I'm sure I could be of some use, even if I'm just a shoulder to try on or have an ear to lend." At this he smiled, patting her shoulder with one hand while drinking the rest of his whiskey with the other. MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS & THQ

Did he know? Did he want her to know he knew? Or had it just been a completely random coincidence? Sky liked to think she didn't believe in coincidences but the fact was they still happened, whether she believed or not. She was on edge, her heart thumping in her ears, while the king seemed perfectly nonchalant about the entire manner. That wasn't how one addressed a pirate, was it? She couldn't come out and ask him if he knew, that would be giving it away, but his unreadable expression and words were driving her mad!
She defaulted to her typical reaction when things were so stubborn and confusing: she grabbed the nearest mug, which happened to be the drink he had bought for her, and took a good long gulp of the burning fluids. She eyed him out of the corner of her eyes and over the rim of the mug. The drink suddenly wasn't going down as easy as it normally did, and the buzz she'd been feeling had all but evaporated as adrenaline surged through her system to counteract it. She forced it down all the same, lowering the mug that was now almost half drained and wiping her mouth in a very unladylike fashion.
He was acting so casual, yet her entire body was screaming mixed messages at her. A part of her that had never left after she laid down her cutlass said to run, that he knew who she was and he was an authority figure. It told her there was only danger. The newest part of her, the dragonrider, told her she should be more respectful, should be standing at attention. And yet another part, perhaps the more inebriated side of her, was telling her to drink more until the confusion went away. She was used to things being simple, they were always pretty straightforward on the ocean, and even in training.
"Memories of the past, things a king doesn't need to concern himself with," she replied, trying to dodge around the question. What was she supposed to say? Memories of when I used to steal from my current brothers-in-arms and from you yourself in order to make a quick buck, that may have incidentally led to the death of dozens of baby dragons! Yeah, that'd go over well. "It would be unbecoming of a dragonrider to mope on the king's shoulder, anyway."

She was worried, and Damien didn't know if he liked that or not. He felt bad for putting her into such a position, but part of him liked how she squirmed under the pressure. Messed up, wasn't it? But the smile never left his face as the king watched what she'd do next. His responses would depend on how she acted around him. Of course she played it off, acting nonchalant about the whole ordeal. His eyes caught every movement - every twitch - as the woman drank her alcohol to brush off his words. "Really, I don't mind. Wouldn't it be rude to deny your king such a simple request? All I want to do is help, you know."Gods above he was being cruel! Just a bit more; if she didn't crack soon he'd leave her to her worrying and call her to the castle another time, when she wasn't drinking. He watched with eagle eyes, wondering what her next move would be. MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS & THQ

What was a girl to do? The king had her cornered, practically had her wriggling under his boot at this point. The only thing she knew to do was to continue to play it off, but his persistence made that nearly impossible. As a pirate she wanted to just shrug it all off, let the king go. As a dragonrider, however, his very presence demanded she show him respect, and he was insisting on hearing her woes. To simply pass him off would be utmost disrespect, and she had to consider her career as well.
What career, though? If he knew about her time as a pirate she would probably be hanged the very next day anyway! She told herself she was overreacting, but that didn't stop it from worrying her. The very thought of the noose sent a cold shiver down her spine, which she drank off as quickly as possible. If she delayed too much it would be just as suspicious. She just needed to trust in her tongue, as quick and deadly as it was, to help her work her way out of this situation. Adrenaline countered alcohol as she shrugged her shoulders, preparing to speak.
She took a deep breath and let out a sigh. "If you insist, sire, I'll share my piece, though I need not a shoulder or an ear as I already have two of each," she said lightly. Make light of the situation, pull away the gravity to help calm her nerves and throw off his suspicions. If they were suspicions. They could just as easily be certainties. "A few years before I joined the dragonriders," she began, another cold tingle travelling through her body. She was dangerously close to a line she never thought she'd cross, and tried even now to avoid: the truth. "I was involved in some less than favorable business overseas." Technically not a lie, as she did her trading across the ocean. "It meant stepping on a lot of toes and I never had the stomach for crushing feet, so the deeds still haunt me from time to time." Be as vague as possible without sounding so, that was key.
And try not to wet yourself in panic while the king sat right there. That tended to be a dead giveaway.

Damien sighed, letting the girl say her piece as he ordered another glass of whiskey on ice. She spoke about doing some offshore business, which wasn't technically a lie. Pirates ran a shady business, but it was a business after all. "Being part of such trades is a rather big deal. I assume something happened to you to stop this...business, yes?" Like the idea of killing unborn dragon babies? 'You're being too hard on her. Tell her the truth, or leave her be. Choose one.' A sturdy voice echoed through his mind and inwardly Damien rolled his eyes. But he had enough of his fun, and finished off his second drink before turning to smile fondly at the ex-pirate before him. "Come, finish your drink and meet me outside. I have something I'd like to discuss with you."He paused, paying the bartender before standing. As he walked to the door he paused, looking over shoulder at Sky before speaking. "And don't worry; you're not in trouble. I just know something that you might want to hear. Of course, the choice is yours..." Then he walked outside, waiting by the door to see if the girl would follow. MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS & THQ

This situation was enough to kill any kind of buzz Sky might've been working on, not that it hadn't been destroyed the instant the king himself had approached her. It was too much, given that all she had wanted to do that night was drink herself into a stupor so she could get an easy night sleep. It seemed that wasn't going to happen at all for her. Her mouth was dry and her heart was pounding in her ears, but she struggled and maintained her cool for the time being. At least, externally.
Then the king was a bit more up front with her.
Her body froze. Shit. Shit shit shit shit! Shit! was about the only thought she could muster as he spoke up, implying that he did, in fact, know about her prior business ventures. She was dead. It was only a matter of time before she found a noose. Or was the king more hands on? He invited her outside. Was he just going to do her in out there? Beheading seemed a bit formal for a pirate. Sky was barely hearing his words at that point, faced with her ultimate destiny, with her approaching death. He ordered her outside, then left.
She stared at her mug, and for a moment considered slipping out through the back. Make a run for it. If she was lucky her old crew or one of the other smugglers were anchored in the cove across the island, she could stow away and just live elsewhere. But she couldn't do that. It would be abandoning Lyroth, who wouldn't survive elsewhere. But then, if she were to die, wouldn't it be the same? He was a stubborn dragon, but he understood her situation, would he want her to live or die? Either way he was alone, it seemed. Yet he was elsewhere at that moment, it seemed, probably hunting somewhere. She couldn't sense him nearby.
I wish I could at least say good-bye, she thought as she grabbed her mug and downed its contents as quick as she could before standing. No, she wouldn't run. She had probably sent dozens of baby dragons to their untimely demise. If she could not redeem herself by protecting the rest then her redemption would come in blood for blood, it seemed. Or perhaps she was already damned to hell.
Either way she marched forward, her head high, through the door. The king was outside, waiting, and she stood at attention. "Sire, I accept the circumstances of my actions and hereby forfeit my life to your judgment," she announced cordially, the words tasting bitter on her tongue.

It took her some time to come outside, and Damien wondered if she'd take him up on his offer. It was pretty late in the evening and there weren't too many people out, which meant he'd be able to speak to her without being interrupted. Now, he could have asked her to come back to the castle and meet him in his office, but there were two issues with that. First off, he always seemed to be interrupted when working or taking on serious business within the castle. And secondly, Damien assumed Sky would run off if given the chance to do so. And he really didn't want that. But he paused in thought as said woman appeared from the tavern, albeit rather hesitantly. Immediately she bowed her head and spoke quickly, causing the male's eyes to widen. What? Why was she speaking like that? He put his hands up defensively, waving them around comically before speaking. "H-hey! Why are you acting so mopey? Am I really such a bad king that I'd have you hanged on the spot for speaking so candidly to me before?" He sighed, because he knew that wasn't the reason why she was acting the way she was. "Please, walk with me dear. I think we're on two completely different levels and we need to see eye to eye, alright? And no more talk about death. It's not very pleasant in my opinion. Unless you're so ready to die, that is." He smiled then, placing his hands behind his back as he chose a random direction and began to walk, assuming she'd follow along. "Now, I should tell you why I've asked you to come with me. I'll start off y saying that I do know your name. But is there anything you'd like to tell me before I begin my small tale?"MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS & THQ

She had been so confident that he had known that she had presented herself before him without even thinking. His response startled her, and stormy grey eyes widened as she realized she might have bumbled horribly. Did he really not know? He had alluded so much toward it that she had been absolutely certain! What else would the king want from her, anyway? She was a dragonrider trainee, there were better riders than her. She might've been one of the best among the trainees, but that wouldn't mean anything to the king, would it? She gulped and pursed her lips, almost afraid to say anything else at this point. Perhaps she was still buzzed, though she felt far from it at that point.
He started walking and Sky followed. She was too stunned to think about where he might take her, about running in another direction and just hoping the whole thing went away. She was too stunned by her own fumble to even think beyond following his orders. Fortunately it was late enough that he wouldn't see that the color drained from her already pale skin--she'd once had a fair tan from the seas, but in the two years since her landfall she'd somehow managed to lose it and return to the porcelain complexion she'd been born with. It was even whiter now that she was so startled, not even the alcohol able to bring color to her cheeks.
As she walked she shook her head the slightest amount. "If I could, sire, I'd rather not say anything else lest I bite off my own tongue at this point," she murmured, completely flustered."If I might be bold as to insist you explain what this is about before I finish digging my own grave . . ." She'd rather find out what he knew before letting something slip. Her confidence was waning as he had sent her reeling twice now in the same evening. Her heart was beating rapidly and she was thankful Lyroth was beyond the range of their bond. If he could sense her panic and fear now he'd probably attack the king.

She really was getting bolder with her statements. Was she so scared that she'd risk getting herself killed before she even had her side of the story explained? He assumed that's what fear did to a person. Damien sighed, walking along while placing his hands in his pockets.Even though she seemed so scared all he could do was laugh at her predicament. "Calm down. If you were going to be hanged or tried, that would have happened long before you became a dragonrider. Believe me, I'd know." He began, eyes looking up at the full moon that shone brightly over the island. It felt wonderful outside, and he let out a deep breath before continuing on. "Sky Blue. An assumed last name because you left your old life to become a pirate. For years you sailed the seas, dealing in unsavory business. But you never killed, not as far as I'm aware."At this he paused, looking over to see her reaction. He knew how hard she'd worked to keep all of this a secret; surely it was harrowing to know the king of all people knew about her past. "You came to Woodkeep, stole dragon eggs, and left again. This happened many times before something finally happened to you. You realized that those eggs might not have been duds. They could've been unborn lives you brought to their deaths."Then he stopped, turning to face Sky with a serious face. "What say you to these accusations?"MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS & THQ

With each word that escaped the king's mouth Sky felt another hammer strike against her heart. Or at least that's what it felt like, being so completely aware of her own heartbeat. He knew. He knew! There was no longer any need to guess at it, to look for insinuations or play some sort of game. The king had come out and spoken the words purposefully and Sky was panicking.
Okay, calm down, calm down! Think this through. He just said if you were going to be punished you would've . . . she reasoned out in her head, looking for her wit but it was escaping her. The king had her back against a wall and the only thing denying it would do was make a fool out of her. He didn't need her confirmation. Then, with utmost gravity, he turned toward her and asked for her plea. It was a moment she had dreaded, though she had always expected it to happen with a noose around her neck to make her words irrelevant. Was this much different? Aside from the lack of a rope she was still being prosecuted.
There was no point in denying it. She was stopped dead in her tracks and felt the world bear down upon her. "I do not deny most of what you say. It's true, except one thing. I've killed one man, but his blood was not innocent nor was it my intent that day to end his life," she replied, pursing her lips and blinking away one of the many memories she sought to keep deep inside. "I had only taken eggs already put aside as duds by the riders, and I assumed them infallible. I was proven wrong when Lyroth hatched from one such egg, the same night I approached the riders," she explained, though she wasn't sure why.
