She could still hear—or feel, she wasn’t quite sure about what was going on inside her head—the unhappy little mutterings from outside. The dragon rarely formed a full sentence, communicating in just flashes of emotion and quips of speech.
It was a little too dark in the tavern, but Valarie welcomed it.
The din of dull conversations formed a decent distractions from her own thoughts. The day hadn’t been particularly hard, but every now and again the past reared its ugly head. She would have thought years ago that the dark wouldn’t comfort her, but her dark room on that ship had been her only safe haven and the darkness served to ease her worries just a tad.
She rubbed the back of her neck and closed her eyes. When she opened them again, she stared into her drink. It wasn’t often that she drank the hard stuff, but she could use a little something today.
Her dragon funneled curiosity and concern, but Valarie told her there was nothing to worry about. She just wanted to make sure that she would be able to fall asleep tonight. When she was feeling low like this, she usually didn’t sleep at all. She promised the big red that they would go for a fly like they always did, though.
Really she probably wouldn’t be too drunk to fly. . . . Hopefully. This would be her only mug full. She could still function on one mug.

The local tavern was a second home to Sky Blue. It had started almost immediately, probably a habit from her days on the ocean. Whenever they made shore the first thing the crew would do was get a good drink from the nearest tavern, and Sky would join them. Now that she was on her own it was a piece of comfort, a familiar habit that she could still maintain, so she found herself there quite frequently. And sometimes she needed it. There were nights when sleep was near impossible, dreams of her past misdeeds, thoughts and imaginings of all the eggs she had taken away from te island, of the potential lives lost, haunted her in the darkness.
When she was inebriated by alcohol they were a lot less intimidating.
She could feel it, like a setting fever, that the night ahead of her would be one of those nights. She pre-empted the feeling by heading straight for the tavern after practice. By the time she noticed a familiar-ish face sitting alone and drinking, Sky had already gotten a couple rounds into her. Her tolerance was high after lots of practice, but her cheeks were still flush as she made her way across the bar to sit next to one of the trainers of the Dragonriders. She wasn't too familiar with Valarie Scovill, aside from the familiarity all Dragonriders had with one another. Ly was only two years old and still couldn't quite bear her weight in flight, not for at least a few more weeks if he continued growing at the rate he was, so she had only gone over the concepts with the trainer alongside a group of fledglings.
It didn't matter what her familiarity was right now, however, not with her tongue loosened by a few rounds and a sleepless night ahead of her. "Y'know, for some reason I didn't expect to see a trainer here. Just seems very . . . casual," she mused as she pulled up a seat alongside the other woman.

Just seems very . . . casual.” The voice wasn’t particularly familiar but they were definitely talking to her.
Valarie looked first over her right shoulder and then twisted around to the other shoulder until she spotted the origin of the voice. A girl about her age, maybe younger, who knew. She looked away just as quickly and smiled down at her mug. It was probably one of her students—she should have known she would see at least one person there she knew.
“We have lives outside of teaching,” she replied with a little shake of her head. The smile remained on her face, though. She was starting to feel the slight cottony feeling she got in her head when she drank.
This would have to be her only drink.
She took a few mouthfuls and then set the mug back on the table and decided to give the girl her undivided attention. Valarie turned in her seat and leaned against the counter. “Even us instructors like to wind down every now and again. We also have fun occasionally,” she continued to tease, meanwhile trying to remember which student this was.
A new rider—not with any dragon ready to be up in the air. She knew that much. Valarie remembered all of the students she sent into the sky, but she recognized her a little bit. Something else was nagging at the back of her mind.

Sky put on a shocked face at the immediate response from the trainer, as a joke. It was probably more so the alcohol in her system then than her actual sense of humor, but all the same she immediately started laughing at her own reaction. "I figured you all just stopped existing when you weren't training newbies and then popped back to be seen every now and then. Or maybe you were all locked in the quarters and weren't allowed out. Actually I don't really know what I figured!" she giggled, finishing off the rest of whatever was in her mug, her cheeks still flushed.
Her eyes turned toward the trainer's mug and wrinkled her nose with disdain. No, no no no, that wouldn't do at all! She made a disgusted noise at the sight of the near empty mug and, without saying another word, flagged down the barkeep from the other end of the counter they were sitting at. "Hey! Hey hey hey! Another round for us over here, on my tab!" she said excitedly, shoving her empty mug almost too hard away from her. Friction stopped it at the opposite edge of the counter, dangerously close to falling off the other side.
Buzzed and excitable, she rotated in her chair to face the trainer. A hand rose up to tap at her own bottom lip for a moment as she thought, fighting through the haze of booze and failing. After a second she tipped her head downward in defeat, shaking it solemnly. "Begging your pardon, but I can't remember your name, just that you're a trainer! How about an introduction, I'm Sky," she said with a wide and goofy grin, extending her hand toward the trainer. It was only held for a moment before her other hand reached up to graciously accept the next round that was brought to them. "Ly's only two years old, so he's not big enough to fly, so I think you only really met me once during an orientation thingy or something . . ." she mused, still battling against the haze of thought.
"Anyway, I can't wait to actually train with you. I've wanted to fly since I was a little girl!" It seemed like so long ago for her, given the life she had led, the latter few years more eventful than the entire lives of some of the island natives.

I promised to take Choin for a flight around the island. . . if I am too drunk she won’t be able to fly straight,” she mused with a slight giggle. “You should probably be cut off, too.”
She said it with a bit more authoritative air, but she wasn’t the girl’s mother so she wasn’t going to push it.
“That is quite alright. My name is Valarie. You have—the purple dragon right? Ly is his name? I’m sure he will be a strong flier. Next year you could start riding on him every now and again to get him used to your weight,” she advised with a gentle smile, nodding her head in thought. She downed the rest of her mug and pushed it off to the side, hoping that the bartender listened to her and didn’t give her anymore.
Choin would be terrible disappointed if she had to cancel the flight. It was both girls’ favorite activity.
Without the mug to distract her, Valarie looked up from the counter to give the girl her proper attention. There was no need to sit and wallow with your memories when someone was right there attempting to have a conversation. It would be a good distraction, anyway.
Or it would have been.
The lighting was not ideal, but there was enough light by the counter so the bartender could do his work without bumping into things, and the light cast over the two girls. Valarie opened her mouth to speak, but that nagging feeling tugged at the threads of her memory. The pale lighting and small din of noise stirred something deep within her, and it quickened her pulse and dried out her mouth.
“Are. . . are you sure we have not properly met before?” she asked. Her palms were clammy and the muscles in her shoulders began to tremble. A fog lied thick over her mind from the drink, and she pushed at it, attempting to figure out this familiarity.
Val, Choin’s sharp voice nagged. She could feel the unease in her rider and didn’t like it.

Sky looked a little envious. "It must be so nice to be able to fly," she giggled. Valarie's advice went unheeded as she grabbed her mug and took another swig haphazardly. "I know my limits, I've been drinking for years!" Sky announced. There was plenty of evidence against the former claim being presented at that very second. While Sky had plenty of experience drinking, and had drunk with the best, she was still very much a maturing young lady who didn't know her own limits, and got carried away. One drink led into another and another and so forth until she woke up the next day.
She gave a little pout when Valarie declined the drink, however. It was always much better to drink with someone else. Sky hadn't come with the intent of having a drinking buddy, more just to cure insomnia, but drinking partners were always a welcome distraction over wallowing in your own self-pity.
"Yeah, that's what they're all saying. Ly was born small, though, and is growing so randomly, it's strange. I'm hoping he'll have another spurt before then, a whole year is so far away," she shrugged. A year was a long time to Sky, given how much she had accomplished in the few years she'd been at sea. But that was something she didn't want to think about. Instead her inebriated mind turned toward thoughts of flying through the sky, and it helped lift her spirits.
However the thoughts of her past were not far away. When Valarie took a more serious tone, insisting they had met at some time before, Sky immediately started to wrack her brain. If Valarie recognized her beyond the dragonriders it only meant one thing: she had seen Sky Blue the Pirate. If that were the case could she recognize Sky as that? Did she know her past? Surely there was no way, the dragonriders were a fairly contained group while Sky had sailed across the ocean! "Sorry, you don't look familiar!" she exclaimed, partially with drunken glee and partially to disguise her worrisome thoughts behind a facade.

It was vague, but it was a prickling familiarity that drove her stomach to knots. She remembered every face of the crew, so she knew it wasn’t that. It was something else. A memory of a memory, faded by time and repression.
But it was there.
“Sorry, you don't look familiar!” Sky insisted, expression flush from the alcohol.
The tavern seemed to heave as the bartender walked in front of the light, casting them in shadow for the briefest moment. In that brief moment, Valarie was cast back into her memories, and it was there. She had seen her, just for a brief moment. She had been younger, not part of the crew, but part of a different crew. Very young. . . in line with some others that had been captured.
No danger to her, but it threw her back into a state she had thought she had control of.
Her breath left her in a gush and she was on her feet fast enough to tip her stool over and send someone hopping out of her way. The stool clattered to the floor and hushed nearby conversations. Valarie’s expression contorted into pure terror for the smallest of moments. She could hear her blood roaring in her ears and for a moment, she was close to tears.
For a moment, had she not worked on control for years, she would have been cast to her knees in a sniveling heap.
But the moment passed and she straightened up. Her hands shook and she panted as if she had been running for a short time. “I’m sorry I—I don’t know wh. . . . I’m sorry,” she murmured quietly, not trusting her voice to hold steady if she spoke any louder.
Choin was outside the tavern door, snarling and hissing. Valarie leaned down to pick up the stool, letting her hair fall into a curtain around her face. She tried her best to settle the red dragon down, but nothing short of going out there to show her Valarie was alright was going to quiet her down. She set the stool up on its legs and fished in her pocket for the right kind of change for the drink.
“I’m sorry—I’ll be right back. . . I have to go comfort my dragon,” she said her voice barely above a whisper. She was trembling from head to toe, but managed to stay upright as she turned.

One moment it was mirthful and joyous for Sky, not expecting anything, not suspecting anything, then suddenly the entire tavern was in an uproar. The other woman, the trainer, was on her feet and her stool was clattering across the floor. Sky was intoxicated, but not to the point where a sudden surge of adrenaline couldn't sober her up a little, and at the sudden motions of the other woman Sky was looking about for some form of threat, something to put the woman on edge like she was.
But aside from the staring faces of all the other patrons of the bar, there was nothing to worry about. Still, the sudden rush of blood and adrenaline had almost immediately killed Sky's buzz, and now she looked at Valarie with a tilted head and confusion on her face, worry slowly working its way into the expression. "Are you okay?" she started, but Valarie quickly interjected, excusing herself from the company and heading for the door. Sky was left on her own bench confused and dazed, and glanced about at everyone for a moment. She took a swig of her mug and climbed to her feet.
When Valarie started out, Sky followed; the bartender didn't bother to stop her about her tab. She was a regular patron, there almost every other night, so she would be back to square out her debts. One of the benefits of being a regular. Right now wasn't the time to interrupt anyway. Sky was experienced at moving quietly, as a smuggler needs to go without being heard, each footstep silent as she approached the door to the building. She inched the door open a crack and peeked outward to see what was going on. She wasn't sure what was going through her mind--perhaps the alcohol increased her curiosity, for she was worried but not enough that she'd go without catching a private moment, it seemed.

Luckily it was a door you had to pull from the inside to open, otherwise she probably would have succeeded and Valarie would have had to pay for a new door on top of the one drink she had had—and possibly a new stool. She hadn’t checked the damage.
The red butted her with her nose soon as she was free, crimson scales bristled and teeth bared. Her ice-blue eyes scanned over Valarie’s frame, looking for the thing that was causing her rider so much distress.
“Shh,” Valarie crooned, resting the palms of her hands against the hot scales of her dragon’s nose. She walked forward, putting a little bit of pressure on the snout as she went to get the dragon to back up away from the tavern so Choin wouldn’t eat the next person who walked out, thinking that they were the ones who had upset her.
They were getting a few looks from people on the street, but most people assumed it was just her red acting up a little bit—being too jealous or too overprotected. Most went about their business after they got a look at what was going on.
“I’m okay. I just—got a little scared, is all. But I’m okay,” Valarie murmured, leaning down to rest her forehead against Choin’s. Her dragon was crouched low, eyes scanning and wings unfurled just a little bit to make her look even bigger. Behind her, her whip-like tail lashed like an angry cat’s.
However, as Valarie’s heartbeat started to return to normal, the great beast relaxed and settled her wings in against her side once more. Choin would have been more curious had the two of them not shared thoughts so often—she knew now what had startled her rider and knew that it was nothing but memories that had chased her out of the tavern, not a physical opponent.
Both of them shared another few moments of closeness until Valarie felt comfortable being on her own again. “I have to go back in and make sure I didn’t break the stool,” she said quietly, rubbing Choin’s nose a little bit.
Though the dragon huffed in protest, she didn’t stop Valarie from turning and walking back to the tavern. Still, she stood vigil, an ever-watchful protector.

It was fortunate that Valarie had calmed her dragon down, because the next person to walk out the door was the person who had upset her. Sky tried to eavesdrop, but it was nearly impossible to overhear the interaction between a rider and their dragon, given the telepathic bond between the two. She was surprised to even hear Valarie talking, though to be fair she usually spoke aloud to Ly whenever he was actually around her. It was more force of habit than anything.
So giving up quickly on the idea of overhearing what was going on, Sky decided to face the problem directly. She carefully pulled open the tavern door and stepped out, shutting it behind her just as Valarie started heading back toward the entrance. After the scene she had caused it was probably better they talked outside, anyway. It meant that they wouldn't get any privacy even if they did speak inside. People tended to try and overhear what caused drama, even if it wasn't their business. Plus the crisp autumn air did help to sober Sky up a little more.
"Hey," she murmured as she caught Valarie just about to head back inside. "The stool's fine. Someone's already taken it," she explained simply, just to get that topic out of the way. Ocean grey eyes flickered to the red dragon standing horrifyingly close given the state of her rider, but Sky was confident she could at least not be eaten in one gulp if she tried. Instead she stepped away from the door and to the side, beckoning Valarie to join her out of the way of the main thoroughfare in and out of the tavern.
"What happened back there? Was it something I said, and are you okay?" she asked, keeping her tone as level as possible and trying her hardest to shove the inebriation out of her mind so that she could think more clearly.

However, it only lasted a fleeting second before she had straightened up and replaced her expression with something softer. A practiced look—she had perfected the smile and it could nine times out of ten pass as the real thing.
“The stool's fine. Someone's already taken it,” Sky assured her.
“Well, I’ll still have to apologize at some point,” she said thoughtfully, avoiding looking directly at the young girl. It was unbecoming, this nervousness she felt around the student now, but it couldn’t be helped.
With time it would pass.
Choin took up a protective position behind her rider, head snaking around Valarie’s side. She could feel it—this was the girl who had scared her so thoroughly. Valarie wouldn’t like it if she ate her, though, so instead she settled on baring her fangs and daring her to come closer. In order to avoid a problem, Valarie kept her distance and put a hand on Choin’s brow.
The girl seemed hesitant at first with Choin being there, but then she gathered herself and motioned for Valarie to follow her. For a second the dragonrider hesitated, unsure if she should humor her, but then her feet started moving and she followed her around the corner. Her dragon stayed close by, keeping her cold gaze forever locked on Sky’s back, tail lashing out behind her. She almost knocked over a passerby who barely jumped out of the way in time.
“What happened back there? Was it something I said, and are you okay?” she asked. Valarie had to envy the amount of composure the younger girl was showing.
Valarie couldn’t even compose herself enough to look at her directly.
She nodded instead and managed that smile. “Everything is fine. I—you just. . . reminded me of someone from long ago and I guess it just put me on edge. . . I probably shouldn’t have had that drink, honestly. I don’t often drink and I have no tolerance for the stuff.” She was speaking a little faster than she intended and the excuse was out of her mouth before she could really think about it.

Even as the rider seemed to try and calm it, the red dragon looked ready to attack Sky. Sky watched the dragon carefully, not letting anything phase through her confidence. It was merely a precaution, keeping a measured distance, keeping aware of the dragon's demeanor. She'd been apart of the riders for two years, that was just long enough that she understood how fierce an angry dragon could be and how you shouldn't even be near one if they started to go wild.
But Sky trusted the other rider to have it under control. Even now they were probably communicating through the bond, as the trainer seemed to be somewhat distracted in her own thoughts. Sky wrote it off for what she thought it might be, and simply focused on the here and now, and on Valarie's answer. Reminded her of someone she'd seen long ago? The statement put Sky on edge, but she took a measured guard while searching through her memories. She'd been a different person aboard the ships, on the ocean, it was possible someone she'd encountered wouldn't recognize her now or would assume she was just a lookalike.
Had she encountered Valarie before her time in the riders? Sky tried to remember but nothing was coming to mind. She was almost certain she didn't know the other woman. She shook her head and laughed it off. "Well I'm sure whomever it was left quite an impact, given the reaction. Can't say you look at all familiar aside from around the dragonriders, and before that I spent most of my time traveling away from Woodkeep, so I don't get many people considering me a familiar face," she mused, making light of it all.

Valarie’s hands were trembling slightly and she felt as if this was a great sign, that she hadn’t just imagined it. Of course she could have meant anything, but Valarie was always the type to go straight to the worst-case scenario. It didn’t matter what it was, or how far-fetched it sounded, she just always assumed the worst thing about every situation.
Including this one.
“Oh—yeah I’m. . . not from Woodkeep either,” she admitted, avoiding eye contact. Choin was an ever-looming presence behind her, eyes boring into Sky.
This girl? Choin asked, lowering her head only slightly to Valarie’s level. Her eyes never left Sky for a moment. She never really spoke a whole lot, but when she did it was almost always important. Valarie didn’t miss the implications of her dragon’s question, either—she wanted to know if Sky was the one who had held her captive on that ship.
And she wanted to know so she could eat her.
Valarie shook her head and lifted her hand to pay her dragon’s leg. No. . . no not at all. . . I think I just saw her passing. . . when my ship was docked or something. . . it might not even be her at all, just someone who looks like someone I saw, she explained, trying to settle down the angry and over-protective red at her side.
Choin lifted her head slightly. She was still suspicious, but all the desire to eat Sky had left her. But if she ever got her talons on the people who had tried to keep Valarie from her. . . they were getting gobbled up. Post haste.
“Sorry,” she murmured, talking about the silence while she spoke with her dragon. “I spent most of my time on a ship. . . I only stayed here at Woodkeep because Choin came and found me.”
