{ } From the moment Maddie woke up this morning, she could tell it was going to be an exciting day.
She had a way of being able to tell these things; from the brightness of the morning to the strength of the breeze, she could guess completely and 100 percently right whenever she wasn't actually wrong. And today she was 100 percently sure that it was a day to go watching the Quarters for activity. She hadn't been there for a whole week on the account of being steered away, but now she could tell it would be a busy day. Her dad would be busy,as usual and her older siblings would be enjoying the sun. The citizens would take advantage of the good weather and be doing their chores, but who would be keeping an eye on little Madeline?
The girl quickly got herself ready and out the side door to the garden. The front door was currently too busy and someone would stop her to ask what she was up to. Maddie wasn't a liar if you didn't count responding to that question with "nothing", and she would prefer to stay that way. After making herself through the mini-maze of greenery, she snuck off to be assimilated with the rest of Woodkeep. Her small size and inconspicuous appearance allowed her to camouflage perfectly within society so long as she played it cool.
But today would be a hard day to play it cool. She was transfixed by the dragon in the sky, jumping and running in glee. To hear the screech resound through the entire village made the girl go still and eyes widen to saucers. It was hatchling time!Maddie ran down the streets with neverending youth, weaving in and out of the busy legs around her.
Eventually, she found herself at the sandpit before most people. Afterall, she didn't have all those time-consuming things like chores to do first. She watched curiously as the dragon started sorting her eggs, almost as if she was proudly putting them on display...sitting down in the sand, the girl began to observe the eggs intensely. She pulled a small notebook from her handy satchel and began to draw.
Maddy liked the first egg. It was small and pretty but simple like her. Maybe it would hatch into a tiny dragon that was tiny enough to stay in her room with her. Then they would never have to be apart. It would be her best friend. Then there was the twitchy yellow-green egg and its not-so twitchy twin. Having two dragon buddies might not be possible, but it would be super cool. The hyper one could be for playing and she could relax and read to the not-hyper one. They both would be her best friend. The black egg looked a little scary, but it had little white spots on the top. She liked to think of the spots as an egg-halo, because even if it did hatch into a scary dragon, it would actually be a sweetheart. They would be best friends. The next egg would definitely be her best friend. It was bright and happy. It really caught her eye and to think of what kind of goofy dragon that would hatch from it made her giggle. The big white egg with the red cracks looked like an eyeball. That dragon would be a oddball, because eyeball and oddball sound the same. She liked odd people and was odd herself, so they would be best friends. Finally, the last two eggs were all big and boring. They would probably hatch into a boring bronze or gold dragon, but all they would need is someone like her to make them fun. Then, they would be best friends.
Maddie concluded that all of these dragon eggs would be 100% compatible with her, so it would finally be time for her to be bonded to her dragon. Sure, most dragon's don't pick people until they are adults, 15 at the least, but from what she as observed, she was the maturist person around the sandpit right now. Maddie gave an affirmin nod and left only minutes before the dragon had chased the others off. She stayed close though, lingering around the living area and studying her pictures, daydreaming. <3| @erreybody | notes

| failure is fleeting I’m gonna walk a hundred miles I’m gonna whistle all the while If that’s what it takes to make me smile I’m gonna walk a hundred miles I’m gonna run right up this hill Summer sky or winter chill If I gotta take a break I will But I’m gonna run right up this hill I wanna hold the whole wide world Right here in my open hands Maybe I’m just a little girl A little girl with great big plans I’m gonna go and take a chance I’m gonna learn to ballet dance Learn a little something ‘bout romance I’m gonna go and take a chance I'm --- She didn’t know why she was fretting so much. The eggs were just born like ten minutes ago. There was no way they would hatch this soon. Yet, here she was, fussing about whether her hair was lying flat enough or that her clothes were on straight enough. Did her face look grubby at all? No she hadn’t done anything today yet.
Not like if they did hatch any of them were going to pick her.
Why would a dragon want something broken like her?
It was fun to look at them, though. So she followed the straggling crowd that hadn’t been able to get there to see them right away. The sands were always really warm, but it never bothered Klara that much. She always preferred the warmth to the cold.
The dragon had a large clutch, larger than she thought would have been possible for a dragon. Of course, she shouldn’t have been surprised but she always was. Sure dragons were large but their eggs and hatchlings weren’t particularly tiny. How did they fit inside there like that? Were they all born at once? She would have to ask someone these questions later. In fact, she probably had already asked them but just forgot.
Somehow she managed to get a good seating. A small child was next to her, looking deep in concentration. Klara watched her for a second, trying to determine if she knew who it was. Nothing about her seemed overtly familiar. The hairstyle and clothes nagged at her, though. There was probably something she was missing.
Klara shook the feeling and glanced over the eggs. Quite a few different colors. She wondered briefly who the father was and why they were able to have such a diverse clutch, but that was probably just one of nature’s miracles. For a moment she let her mind venture, imagining one of them hatching and picking her. Maybe the black one, or maybe even a white one. Probably not—would they all hatch to mirror their eggshells?
“Which one is your favorite?” she asked the girl, turning and smiling. She added, more to herself, “I hope they all hatch. It’s so sad when there are duds. . . knowing what potential there could have been.” | |

{ } At first, Mady didn't even realize she wasn't alone anymore. She was looking over her pictures obsessively, but with child-like innocence. Lost in her imagination, her mind began to spin the fantasy of all the adventure and fun she would have with one of the future eggs, one by one.
But when Klara spoke, she snapped out of it, her gaze meeting the girl's in confusion. She quickly realized what she was talking about and her face brightened. Someone wanted to talk about dragons with her! How fun! Mady quickly walked up to the girl with a newfound cheery energy, opening her sketchpad wide and pointing to the illustrations of an egg that wasn't in the clutch. From what she had drawn, the egg was brown and covered in patches."This one was my favorite because I like chocolate milk and it reminds me of a cow."Mady stated, continuing with a nod to the comment about duds. "It probably would have been a great friend if it ever hatched...". Nonetheless, she turned the page to her most recent illustrations. "I like all of them, but I like the one that will be mines the best, naturally.". Mady giggled, closing the sketch pad and looking back out to the eggs and the dragon again. She was a good mother, even if she was a cranky red dragon. "What is your favorite egg?" <3| @tagged | notes

She reached out to lightly grip the corner and steady the picture to look at it better, her eyes lighting up. “Wow that looks really good. Aren’t you just the little artist,” she praised, smiling. “It kinda does look like a little cow. Maybe it was actually a cow egg.”
She giggled, hoping she didn’t accidentally make the child think that cows hatched out of eggs. She couldn’t tell how old the girl was because every time she looked away the face was different, but judging just by height and hair style and body type she was young.
“I like all of them, but I like the one that will be mines the best, naturally,” the girl explained.
Adjusting her expression to look more serious, Klara nodded sagely. “Well yes, of course. You’ll have to make sure to remember what the egg looked like before it hatched.”
What a cute little child.
Hopefully when Klara had a kid they’d be as cute as this little bug.
“My favorite egg?” Klara repeated, sitting back on her haunches to think about it. She hadn’t actually thought about it before and she stared at them for a little bit. “Well, this one here is tiny and cute. . . but these two green ones remind me of grass.” She pointed to them each in turn, going in order by how the dragon mother had arranged them herself.
“This one looks like the night sky, and I think that’s pretty neat. This one, though. . . this one just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy when I look at it.” She smiled, her hands itching to run along the side of the shells, but she knew the mother would never approve.
And she liked her fingers attached to her hand.
For a moment she remained silent, looking at the last three eggs. She still couldn’t believe such varying eggs came from the same parents, but she was no dragon specialist. “This red and white one is the strangest. . . . and these two white ones look like beautiful pearls. So it’s hard to pick between any of them, but if I had to pick based off of looks alone I think I’d pick this sunny one here. But I’m sure all of them will hatch beautiful dragons that I wouldn’t mind getting to know.”

{ } Maddie beamed at the compliment. The only one who had ever said she was a great artist was her dad. And he doesn't count, because thats what dads have to to.Its pretty much a law."Thank you." When Klara said it looked like a cow egg, Maddie giggled along. On one side, she knew cows didn't come in eggs. On the other side, she has never actually seen a cow give birth or lay an egg. Maddie decided to take a little note on cow eggs later, just to be safe.
The older girl looked back to the eggs and spoke again. She was describing each of them, a lot like how Maddie had but different in what she said."Yup. They will all be big, pretty, smart, powerful dragons. But in the end, only one of them can be compatible with a person, right?" . Maddie sighed, mulling over her thoughts. She couldn't say that her favorite was a dud then, now could she? Tucking the thought away for now, she continued to respond to Klara. "If your favorite is the orange one, does that mean its the one you want to hold and feel? Because if thats the case, it might be the dragon for you!".The girl said the last part full of energy and excitement, hoping that some of it would rub off on Klara. "And maybe the other riders will stay in touch with you and you can meet the other dragons. If one of them was mine, I know I would." . The girl hummed, swaying back and forth to get rid of the extra energy. "And since you think I am good at drawing, I'll draw you and your dragon a portrait. " <3| @tagged | notes

She did like how the egg looked, but that was it. Klara didn’t dare think about what kind of dragon she’d like to have imprint on her because she was pretty sure none ever would. Dragons would want strong people to imprint on, right? Not broken people like her.
Still, though, she smiled and shrugged. “I wouldn’t mind if any of them chose me. It’s an honor no matter what kind of dragon it is. Everyone secretly hopes it’s a nice rare dragon, though, right? Still, I can’t help but think that this orange one will hatch into a really stunning dragon. All of them will, but I think this one is really going to shine,” she explained, giggling a little at her little pun.
The little girl went on and Klara listened intently, an amused little smile tugging at her mouth. She obviously couldn’t wait until she got her own dragon, though Klara was certain that it would be a few years yet.
“Y’know you’re pretty smart,” she complicated, sitting back and smiling. “How old are you?”
It was an innocent enough question, but when it left her mouth Klara couldn’t help but feel like she might be being a little rude. Did little children understand that concept? Admittedly Klara wasn’t really around small children a whole lot.
“I’d stay in touch with the others, too. I mean—they’re siblings! Why wouldn’t you want your dragon to hang out with their siblings every now and again? Would be downright mean to keep them separated from each other, wouldn’t you think?” she pointed out with a little smile. “I know I wouldn’t want to be kept away from my brother.”
Klara was a little touched at the offer. “Well if I manage to impress a dragon you’ll be the first to know! Maybe we can trade—your beautiful portrait for some of the flowers from my shop!
“My name’s Klara, by the way!”

{ } Maddie liked that the older girl decided to talk to her. Most older people in town had a hard time doing this. They either treated her like a baby because she was so much younger than everyone else or treated her like her mother because she was inherently royalty like her. This person was different."Thank ya, mam! I'm ten and one-thirds years old." Maddie chimed proudly. Being called pretty was nice and all, but it was awesome to hear someone say she was smart for once.
Maddie actually hadn't thought of the fact that the dragons from the same clutch were siblings. They all looked so different and she never actually saw them interact in a sibling way. She would have to ask her father to ask Ereneth about his siblings one day.
"Flowers for a picture? Sounds like a great trade!" She could decorate her room with them in case the dragon liked flowers. When Klara asked for her name, she stood before her and bowed like she had rehearsed and been told to. "Madeline Klien is my name. Its nice to meet you, Klara." Looking up with a bright smile. She didn't know there was anyone in town who didn't recognize her on the spot anymore! She hoped things wouldn't change now. But Klara didn't seem like that type of person.

It’s nice to meet you, Klara,” the girl said with a cute little curtsey.
The smile didn’t leave Klara’s expression, but all of the color did drain from her face.
The princess. She had been sitting there talking to the princess the whole time! Was she even allowed to do that? Just casually converse with the king’s daughter like she hadn’t a care in the world?
No—no if she hadn’t been allowed to do that Madeline would have made her go away a long time ago.
Klara took a deep breath to center herself and then smiled again. This time it was a little more reserved, and she would probably be a little bit more formal, but obviously the small child had enjoyed their little talks. She didn’t want to make it awkward by treating her any differently now that she knew she was Woodkeep’s little angel.
“It’s very lovely to meet you too, Medeline. I’m sorry I didn’t recognize you earlier, I have a hard time recognizing people,” she explained, feeling like she probably owed some sort of reasoning. “And it’s a deal. If I get a dragon partner, I’ll come get my portrait and you get some lovely flowers! What’s your favorite color?”

{ } Klara didn't seem too phased by finding out she was the princess, which made the girl smile. She even called her "Madeline". Not "Your Highness". Thats what they called her brother. Not "Your Majesty" either, which is what her parents were called. She was just Maddie. And Maddie liked to talk about dragons with people, as she has found out.
Because of that, she smiled and giggled. "It must have surprised ya, huh?". The girl took the edges of her dress in hand and swayed a little. "Its ok. Its not the looks that matter anyway. Its the things you do together!" Of course, she couldn't understand the scope of Klara's ailment. As far as she knew, Klara just had a bad memory for faces like some people did. Even if she tried to explain it to her, she probably wouldn't quite understand what it meant to not be able to ever recognize any face no matter how long you've known them.
Placing her finger on her lip and giving a hum, Maddie thought about what to say. "I like yellow the most. I wear pink a lot because I like it too, but I rarely ever see yellow so when I do it makes me very happy."

More likely than not, the next small child who looked anything remotely close to Madeline would be mistaken for the princess.
That was going to be awkward.
“Yellow, huh?” she echoed, smiling. Klara lifted her hand and pulled gently at some of her blonde strands. That was probably as close to yellow hair was going to get. She didn’t really know where she was going with it, she just felt like pointing it out. “Like my hair?”
She let go of her hair and nodded once, sagely. “Yellow is a wonderful color, I think. I have the perfect idea in mind already for you. Do you like bouquets, or would you prefer something you can water and plant and look after forever?” she asked, shifting her position on the ground so she was sitting on her knees.
Bouquets were nice, but Klara didn’t want to get her something that would just die eventually when she was going to give her such a nice picture she could keep forever. If Madeline would take care of a plotted plant, then she’d want to get one of those, instead!
