►HATCHINGS
Hatchings occur when a female dragon mates with a male dragon and she places her clutch on the sands to incubate. It's hard to tell when a clutch is ready to hatch; some have taken months while some only take a few weeks to hatch. Humans know when a clutch is about to hatch because the mother dragon begins a deep humming that is mirrored by all dragons on the island to signify that new life is about to come forth.
But before that, let's get into how Imprinting and the like works!
As you know, Imprinting is what happens when a baby dragon bonds with a human. It's a strange thing to understand if you haven't had it happen to you, or so many dragonriders say when asked. When a baby dragon hatches, they instantly crave to bond with someone whether it be person or another animal. It is assumed that, before humans found dragon eggs, the babies would Imprint upon one another or other animals found on the island. But other animals aren't as smart as dragons, so now dragons are bred and raised to crave a higher intelligence to bond with so they can be taught and learn new things. That being said, baby dragons immediately want to bond with a human, and they generally have an idea as to whom they want to be bonded with.
No one knows why dragons choose who they choose. They don't always choose the first human they see; sometimes they walk around and deliberate their choices before finally choosing.
Who do they choose? Well, it's known that dragons can only Imprint on humans ages 15 to 21 but it's not known why. Regardless, a census is taken every year on Woodkeep. That way it's known who should be called forth to the hatching sands when a clutch is about to hatch. Once all the people who are eligible are lined up, they wait and watch as the dragons hatch.
At this point, the humans wait where they are assigned and cannot interact with the dragons as they hatch. The dragons roam around until the choose their bonded, at which point they are escorted off the sands and into the Dragonrider's Quarters to begin their life as a dragonrider.
However, not everything goes so smoothly every time a hatching occurs. Some dragons might want to Imprint on the same person. If that happens, they will fight one another to the death. The victor then claims the spoils, as the saying goes. Some dragons might attack humans on the sands for various reasons, so all people who sign up to be Imprinted upon are warned that they could be seriously wounded to the point of death.
Also, some eggs might not hatch. These are called 'duds' and are disposed of by the mother dragon who sets them aflame in a ritual of sorts.
Lots of strange things have happened during hatchings. Make sure to sit in the stands even if you're not available to become Imprinted upon yourself...because you never know what could happen!
