history
Born away from Woodkeep in the kingdom of Farkhan, the only thing the boy knew from his toddler years is labor. He wasn't just born to a poor family; the redhead came into the world as the only son of Fargus and Miranda Neryil, slaves to nobility. Naturally, as all their 'possessions' belonged to their owners, so was their kid. Shudra was born a slave.
Naturally he and his parents weren't the only ones; this darkened network of exchange in humans has been going on for years right under royalty's noses, unnoticed. A network in which the nobles would trade money for men, in order to gain more fortune. Shudra never got to learn the name of the noble he served, his family never told him and he wouldn't dare show such disrespect as to ask his owner a casual question. In 'family', I don't mean Fargus and Miranda; they were separated from their child at an early stage and barely got to see him. Shudra himself was traded around nobles more than thrice, adjusting to working with different people and living in different places.
He wasn't particularly good at working, either; you can't expect a child to do well with metal when he has no experience whatsoever. He had to learn the labor the hard way. And due to not standing in his owners' demands, Shudra was physically marked as a slave. Hence, the numerous 'tattoos' on his form. For every owner he was sold to, an article of decoration was added on his body. Let the world know that Shudra Hale is a slave for life, why not? Frustration and depression built up easily, turned into determination and resolve. By the age of seven, Shudra could manage with an adult's 'work' day.
He stopped caring about his fellow slaves, and lived only to satisfy his nobles. Something in Shudra prevented him from the expected will to die; instead, his resolution to live only got stronger. One day, by the age of 8, he was bought by another noble. That specific, old man had only Shudra for a slave, and right after trade was complete, took the marked boy with him and escaped the kingdom on a ship, together with several others. As they sailed away from the kingdom, Shudra could see the fires bursting in several places. Whether it was a rebellion, an uprising, a crusade or purge, punishment or justice, he never got to learn. Maybe it was just a steam-engine related accident. But if anything, Shudra was saved from that, all thanks to the old man.
The noble introduced himself as Lucas Neryil and stated his destination was simply 'a different country'. He changed the redheaded boy's name to Gerik Hale, and referred to him like a regular human. Obviously, Shudra - Gerik by then - couldn't trust the guy, him being part of that system. Regardless, he complied with the odd man's every request with the least emotion he could muster. Named differently or treated differently, Gerik was still a bought slave. He had to obey every demand (request), no matter how weird.
The eventual destination ended up being Woodkeep. In the city, Lucas presented himself and Gerik as a couple of relatives who want to settle down. Using his knowledge as a noble, Lucas got some volunteers to help with a small business he called 'Crafts Men', where Gerik would be earning his own fortune. Using the experience and knowledge he gained as a slave in Farkhan, Gerik made for a good blacksmith who requested nothing more than what was told to him. He continued to comply with old Lucas' requests, in his own, odd way. However, the boy couldn't bring himself to bond with anyone. He would just answer questions, perhaps people considering him a friend, but him only seeing others as strangers.
Though it was inevitable that with how he was treated, Gerik would come to question himself as a slave. Those were definitely not terms you put your dispatchable belongings in. After asking Lucas what's really happening, he became aware of his standing. To the noble, he was like a grandson; Lucas wanted Gerik to see him as a parent and not an owner. Something like that, Gerik definitely didn't comprehend right away, and found himself in great confusion, unable to tell what exactly is happening. He's cast away his hopes long ago, and suddenly this man comes along.
It took Gerik some time before he himself started warming up to the noble. However, if Lucas himself hadn't started working together with the boy in the workshop, this might have never came. Nobles weren't supposed to do manual labor, especially not at this age. Gerik's whole view of the old man changed, and soon warmed up to him. Finally in so long, Gerik could act like a regular boy, having a parent to take care of him, and warm up to him. He'd forgot about this feeling long ago. And from there on, Gerik Hale's casual, happy life as Lucas Neryil's only son started officially.
Time passed. A long time passed. Gerik found friends around Woodkeep, both around his age and older than him. He was always more productive than the others, seeing how he was used to working already. His mark of the slave unknown to almost everybody, the boy could just go on with his life like everybody else. Overall, he was cheerful; happy to just be around. And soon enough, Lucas presented Gerik with a gift, for his fifteenth birthday; a promise, to go and watch the hatching together for the first time. The workshop would be closed for that particular day, as in all the years they have been working there, not many customers were around anyway. A month away from Gerik's birthday. However, misfortune befell, and Lucas fell ill shortly before the hatching. Fifteen year-old Gerik stayed by his father's side to make sure he felt better, passing on the event.
The same misfortune befell the parent and child the next year; however, Lucas still insisted Gerik would go to watch the hatching. Doing as his father pestered him to, the redhead arrived at the event, watching the eggs hatching. Before he knew it, a newly hatched beast sprung right out of its shell to ram into the boy. That was the first time Gerik ever interacted with the creature he would eventually call Murel. The red dragon, Murel.
Back then, this red dragon was just named 'dragon'. Gerik never really thought of a suitable name for the creature until Lucas suggested he'd do that. The suggestion of becoming a knight came too, but seeing how the workshop was more important to the boy than serving Woodkeep directly, he declined the offer. Though, if something was weird about his life then, was how often Dragon tried assaulting him directly; often resulting in Gerik escaping or having to silence the creature some way. To understand his dragon's unexpected attacks, which never even seemed that hostile, Gerik took to the knights anyway; perhaps, to strengthen his bond with Dragon.
Murel (by then), grew up splendidly, and Gerik served as a good soldier. He never disobeyed and made sure to perform his tasks to their utmost greatest level. Somehow, the young soldier came to understand his partner. When he thought Murel would cease with his unexplainable attacks, the young man resigned from the knights (though still reserved the spot would the royal family or the knights would call him for anything), and returned to work at his father's workshop. Peaceful life with a red dragon; doesn't sound too likely, does it.
And it indeed wasn't, when one day, Murel attacked again, causing Gerik to attempt defend himself with everything he had at his disposal: weapons, structures, field and strength, to subdue his partner. It was an all-out battle involving everything the two parties had, and that was when the redhead understood what was going on. It was most likely a test. A test for Gerik, to show if he's worthy of being partnered with such a powerful creature. It was a long skirmish, that lasted throughout the entire day. And in the end, Gerik fell down. Injured, exhausted, completely defeated; but not without proving himself to be somewhat capable against a fully grow red dragon. Having not been familiar with the imprinting that well, the young man was sure he would be killed there for displaying weakness.
But that wasn't the case. Murel helped nurture his partner back to full health. Gerik swore that day to get better, to stand in his partner's expectations. A rivalry of the sort. That's what connects these two.
