It was another of those travel out and deliver jobs that Doc had given to her. This time the job entailed a sickly rancher who had managed to catch a fever, she was to go and give him the medicine as well as advise the family on administering further treatments. She had been told it wasn't too serious only that the poor man was dying but rather he was merely too weak to work from dawn till dusk, which was usual life for those outside the middle class. Thankfully the rancher's home was just outside the Commoner's Quarters. The wooden buildings ending from tough wood to shabby wood to open farmland. She passed two farms, their fields holding crops suited for the current season. She had heard that there had been some particular nuisances within the farming community, that both insects and predators preyed on their works. The insects were of the usual, the varmints evolving to become immune to the majority of poisons. Almost like the rabbits but those weren't so lively these days. Oh no, apparently there were wolves that not only hunted the poor rodents but also some farmers' and ranchers' livestock. Many a time when they had come to visit did they complain about chicken being mauled or stolen, about sheep turning to spoiled mutton.
But such was the way of life and they knew this. They could not rely completely on the dragonriders, though they did send for some help with the matter. Most of the countryfolk relied on traps and poisons they procured from Rune herself, another thing she was going to deliver.
Rune found herself at the ranch, greeting the wife before being shown in. Once in the girl did her duty, providing the medicine for the rancher and the poison for the varmints that plagued their lands. The wife thanked her heartily, providing a small bag of coin; while the rancher slept. She had also provided an herbal mix that would allow him to energize once he had fully recovered which the wife was all too happy to acquire. It was a short visit, ending with the wife giving her a hug and sending her on her way. Though it wasn't to be an uneventful one apparently.
The apprentice doctor found herself not even a few meters from the house when the ground started shaking. A shrill cry from a child, one that she knew was the rancher's son; echoed from behind her as loud as could be. The girl only managed to half-turn when she saw a herd of fifteen goats running straight for her, all in some frenzy and all of them running straight for her. Obviously she ran. At one moment trying to dodge out of the way until she realized the fleabags were homing in on her. "This is just great." Rune huffed in her monotone voice, tossing herself over barrels and fences and farmer's houses. She heard a few more shrill cries, mostly from the wives and children of the farmers who spotted her. She even heard one child scream "Run Runey. run!"
Well this girl was certainly running.

AS SOON AS THE LIGHTS GO DOWN THE SHADOWS ARE ON YOUR SIDE "TAKE IT EASY, CHAR." she would coo as she leaned down and brushed her fingers along the scales of his long neck. they felt like snake scales...but a lot harder. kind of like little thin discs of rock that built up armor. dominia giggled sweetly to herself, moving her hand away and tucking it back into her lap. charaz snorted and turned his hard beady eyes away.
today was a day of relaxation, for the most part. her mother and father were out doing others things---obviously off woodkeep. they didn't need her for anything. she tried to offer help to the neighbors, but they said they didn't need it. and everyone else, who usually needed her as some messenger or assistant, was either gone like her parents or they were taking a 'break' today. at first she was frustrated, but then she saw this as a way to spend more time with her partner.
he was stubborn, and he was very greedy most of the time. but the way he was so protective of her made her heart flutter. it made her feel safe and secure around him...and she definitely needed something like that.
dominia sighed and moved her gaze to the nearby clouds. a weak smile bloomed across her face, and again, she would lean forward. but instead of gently stroking him, she patted at his shoulder, scaring him and making him lurch to the left suddenly. she gaped and hurriedly grabbed at the horn of his 'saddle.' but it didn't take too long for him to even himself out. dominia huffed and shook her head.
"WE NEED TO WORK ON THAT..." was all she said, when a shrill cry suddenly rattled in her ears. several of them, all over the place. charaz seemed to notice it too, for he lowered and titled his head to get a quick view of the ground. at first she was tempted to ignore it. but then, the hammering sound of hooves filled her ears as well. it was very faint, almost unnoticeable. nevertheless, she wanted to see what was going on down there.
dominia sighed and curled her fingers around the edges of the dragon's large saddle, leaning forward and rolling her shoulders regretfully. "LET'S SEE WHAT'S GOING ON." charaz instantly obeyed, changing directions and flying toward the ground with a single thrust of his massive silvery wings.
once they were hovering over the trees, they could spot the massive herd of goats, and what they were chasing. a girl, who looked about dominia's age. they were practically closing in on her at this point. dominia yanked her head back and clutched the saddle, lifting a finger and pointing to a spot way ahead of the girl. "LAND OVER THERE!" with another fleeting thrust of his massive wings, they flew forward, but eventually dove between the trees and landed in front of the herd and girl.
the earth rattled and shook for only a few seconds. but she guessed this would frighten the goats enough. either way, even if she did have a massive dragon, the girl leaped down with the support of charaz's wing, standing in front of the dragon with a small dagger in her right hand.
"BEGONE, YOU VERMIN GOATS!" she yelled, and waved her dagger around in the air playfully. she knew she wouldn't be any help. but it was fun to be so energetic when things like this were happening.

a toymaker's creation 'Cause these chords are hypnotizing and the whole world's harmonizing so please children stop your crying and just sing along with me! Rune was either running out of breath or she was just getting plain old tired, or perhaps both. No matter which option it was, the girl was slowing and the pounding of hooves was getting stronger which meant they were getting closer. Brilliant, just... brilliant? Already the apprentice could pretty much figure out how this all started. The whole thing originating from the medicine she gave to the rancher and their mischievous little kid who thought it might be fun to feed goats energy powder. That's most likely how it went considering the mangy things kept following her no matter how hard she made her path. "Are you serious?" left the girl as she rounded a corner only to end up jumping backward onto her bum when a giant silvery beast came crashing down in front of her. The ground rumbled, sending half the goats into a frightened flee - only for them to stiffen up and flip over.
Now the other half just froze, acting like statues while they bleated out frightful cries. Some managed to let their legs loosen, though they ended up tripping over themselves again with a sudden voice ringing out from a girl. One who had maneuvered her way down the silver dragon's wing to wave a little dagger around.
If they weren't frozen they were fleeing by the time Rune got to her legs. A swift "Thank you." escaped her as she patted off her dusted behind. Her hands searched her waist for her satchel, finding it missing only for her eyes to spot it behind her completely squashed and trampled by the fleeing goats. Well the was just great. Her frozen face showed nothing as the girl trotted over, picking up the squished thing. One look inside confirmed the coin was fine but not the next batch of herbs...
"And there's none left back home..." her voice echoed her thoughts aloud. Rune spun on her heel, walking almost too quickly up to the dragonrider, "You, help me gather some Lyre Lead Sage." |
