I don't know when, but I now know i'll never have to struggle alone The young man stood on the white sands, his oceanic blue eyes gazing out at that vast body of water that threatened to swallow the island. He was used to it, he'd grown around the infinite blue his whole life. Why, then, was it that when he looked out he felt an unease? It was persistent and small like an itch he couldn't scratch no matter how he tried. At the same time, he felt as though it were an important piece of himself, as though once upon a time he had been born at sea and it was calling him back. It was an uncomfortable thought for him, to say the least.
The man closed his eyes. He wasn't here to reminisce, he was on duty. There had lately been complaints of suspicious activity, whether poachers had found their way to the island or some other disturbance, it was the young man's duty to be the first to check it out. His armor shone in the midday sun, a blue cloak hanging about his shoulders, a silver emblazoned insignia of the Dragon Knights displayed proudly heralding him as on patrol. That's right, he was no longer simply Eric, he was Captain. Whatever personal thoughts he had could wait.
The Dragon Knight took stride, walking along the sands, his cloak billowing lightly in the breeze that always seemed to accompany the beach. His face was soft and calm and his eyes focused catching every detail. If there was a disturbance as the reports had said, he would be sure to find it.

It was a delivery job that had taken Rune from the main town to the little sailor's nest that rested on the edges of the beach. One of the old sailor man had thrown out his back and so she was sent to help soothe the pain and relax him. After that was done, Rune left them with a medicine to help with the soreness as well as some teabags for a further effect. She had just been heading back home when one of the sailor's sons told her that an extra amount of seaweed had been washing ashore as of late. That was enough to get the girl to the more or less empty parts of the beach, collecting up the moistened strands of sea green and throwing them into a pile.
Now she had gotten there before its current visitor, so when she discarded her clothes minus her undergarments; she had nothing to be ashamed of. In fact she didn't even realize anyone was coming when she clambered into the ocean to swim through the shallows in search of more snagged pieces, maybe grab a shell or two if she could find a big one. Now no one would have given her second look if they did spot her out there, thinking her a child playing some childish diving game in the water. After all, the girl wasn't exactly... womanly. Sure she had long hair and fair skin along with some pretty if not dead-looking blue eyes, but that was nothing compared to her figure-less body. Even with the little strap of cloth to cover her almost nonexistent chest, she could have looked like a young boy who had yet to hit puberty. Especially if she cut off all her hair. Heck the skin-tight shorts that were fastened to her waist did little to help the late teen.
But Rune held no thoughts to her own body, content with how she was unless there was a cut or something that she needed to clean. Otherwise, the girl's body was the last thing on her mind. But that was beside the point. At that moment the girl was more or less focusing on the drab pieces of seaweed she could spot, diving down to fetch them.
It were times like these that the apprentice wished she held some sort of eye device so she didn't have to keep coming up when she miscalculated. Her little black head bobbed in the water every time she managed to snag a piece or miss it completely. Colorful fish would swim by, patrolling their rainbow reef homes. Life was vivid in the area, as sea creatures walked the bottom while. It would have been an amazing sight if the girl dared to open her eyes underwater. Salt water clung to her skin and hair, her entire right side nearly engulfed in the long strands of sea weed. Rune almost looked like some monster or perhaps a drowned girl with only her long black hair and mass of vegetation actually visible from the water. Her pale face was no more than a fleck as the gatherer maintained a floating position to breath, getting ready to heave the mass back to the beach.

I don't know when, but I now know i'll never have to struggle alone His search was not as open and closed as he had initially hoped. He had expected the disturbance to have been fairly obvious , perhaps signs of life that weren't supposed to be or vegetation that had been carried from one part of the island to here. Instead, what greeted Eric was a calmness. It wasn't a bad thing, it meant all was well-- but he hadn't expected so many people to have reported the same inaccurate report. If even just a little, there had to be some shred of truth in their words. This being held true, he walked purposefully, his boots sinking into the sand with every step. It was difficult progress and his outfit wasn't helping in the least-- but at least he was prepared for anything that might be lurking about. At least, that's what he'd thought.
After some time, he reached a section of the beach that wasn't uninhabited as the previous areas had been. Immediately the young captain could tell something was different. His eyes were drawn to a pile of seaweed. So, there was someone, or something here. His suspicions were confirmed when he looked out to the waters to see something out in the tide. At first he couldn't tell exactly what it was and his breath halted for a moment. Was this the disturbance? As he watched, he could make out a face, small and pale amid the tangle of seaweed. He tilted his head and walked out toward the figure, not minding as water splatted about his boots. He waded out into the water and intercepted the girl, dragging him and the seaweed to shore wordlessly.
He'd blink as he lifted her from the water. he hardly weighed anything, and he was small to boot-- it was like holding a doll in his arms. Eric would set the boy down feet first on the sand before looking over to the pile he'd created. It looked as though this person was the gatherer, though to what end Eric wasn't sure. "Are you alright? It looked like you were having a bit of trouble." Eric spoke softly, his voice smooth as he picked up some seaweed and tossed it into the pile. Whatever the purpose, it'd seemed like this boy had collected quite a lot of it.

a toymaker's creation 'Cause these chords are hypnotizing and the whole world's harmonizing so please children stop your crying and just sing along with me! All she was doing was resting, just letting her body get pulled around by the waves and letting the water hold the mass of the plantation on her shoulder. Her body had begun to loosen itself to dive once more in order to cover the other shoulder in the sea plants she gathered, only before the small girl had the chance she found herself being dragged out of the water.
Well dragged wasn't really a good word for it. Plucked? Carried? No matter what word she used, Rune found herself in the arms of a guy who looked about her age or a bit older. She held no surprise on her face nor did she make a peep, completely silent all the way back to the beach where the armor clad lad tossed her seaweed into the pile she had earlier gathered. He held wonderfully toned muscles she had noted, something only found in warriors and by his armor the lad was a dragonrider, though his beast seemed to be nowhere within the vicinity. Rune tested the warm sands against her bare feet, as she had been as such; her hands moving to wipe off the salt water from her arms and hair. She had flung the long black mass over her shoulder when the male finally said something.
"Are you alright?" He asked. Did she not look alright? Rune contemplated for a second... yup, she was pretty sure she felt just fine. She covered her belly in a sort of resting position as the girl finally said something, albeit it was in her normal monotone voice. "I feel fine. I was just resting when you came." The girl said, her voice holding an obvious feminine hum to it. "Though I suggest you quickly dry off your armor. I'm sure a little salt water won't tarnish that silver insignia but I'm also sure that not all that armor is silver." The girl continued, walking past the man to the pile of seaweed before kneeling next to it, looking for her clothes... only to discover that they were gone. The girl fished through the pile of sea weed, finding nothing; except the remnants of small paw prints. Paw prints that led away down the beach. Well that was just curious wasn't it? "...You wouldn't have happened to spot some clothed furry creature running down the beach have you..?" Rune asked, turning to look at the armor clad dragonknight. I don't know when, but I now know i'll never have to struggle alone "A clothed furry creature? You know, I may have passed by one on my way here." Eric mused to himself, his face thoughtful. Honestly, he couldn't say he'd seen one let alone expected to ever see one in his lifetime. The idea was preposterous-- but by the markings in the sand, perhaps this furry culprit was behind the disturbances-- stealing the clothes of innocent people forcing them to trod back to the village in their undergarments. Now that he thought about it, he'd found it quite odd that none of them had divulged what sort of disturbance it had been. The pieces were starting to fall into place in a way that seemed comedic and yet completely logical by some odd sense of irony.
The boy he'd set down, however, seemed to be more concerned about Eric's armor than anything else and Eric gave him a small smile. "There's no need to worry about my armor immediately. It'll take more than an hour or so for it to rust." Now that he thought about it, the young boy sounded a little strange, he sounded almost like a girl, but he'd seen boys with hair longer than his and voices about as feminine. Still... he couldn't help but wonder... His eyes moved to where her breasts would be if she was a girl. Unsettling, he couldn't tell. His breasts were covered, but he couldn't notice anything substantial. Eric's face turned slightly red as he realized where he was looking and averted his eyes quickly toward the direction the paw prints headed further inland.
Though Eric couldn't glean the other's gender with certainty he would play it safe and remain as ambiguous as possible with whatever he said. He didn't want to hurt his feelings if he was a guy like the captain expected, but if she was a girl... what kind of wrath would he face upon letting the opposite slip? Eric let out a heave, why did things have to always be so complicated? He undid his cloak and wrapped it around the young girl. "This will have to do in the meantime. At least you're a bit more decent." He thought to himself aloud. "What are you doing out here? Do your parents know you're playing this far from town?"

a toymaker's creation 'Cause these chords are hypnotizing and the whole world's harmonizing so please children stop your crying and just sing along with me! Rune felt herself stiffen. He had seen it? The girl jumped to her feet, almost falling backward by her own body's suddenness - saving herself by re-positioning herself in time. "What did it look like? Did you see where it was headed? Were there flippers?" The girl railed off seriously, her eyes almost holding a twinkle that grew brighter with every question. She hadn't the slightest clue that he was fibbing. All her curiosity pointed straight at the mysterious creature that stole her clothes and satchel. But then another thought came to mind... If he saw the creature running away with someone's clothing and came in this direction did that mean-?
Suddenly the girl felt her body sub-consciously withdraw from the young man. Was he-? Could he be-? Doc had warned her about people like him, told her to always keep tear-powder on hand when she went out just for these situations. But with her satchel missing that was no longer an option. Doc had told her that running was the next option. But if she did that, she'd have to go romping after the mysterious clothing-thief by herself and if it were dangerous, how would she be able to fight it alone? And she couldn't just kick him well between the legs as she needed him to be able to stand and once again, running was not an option. Well... So much for those lessons.
Rune felt herself slowly nod to information on the youth's armor. Her dull eyes on his, watching them trace down to her chest. Now if Rune were like a normal girl, she'd be beat red with both arms tied around herself screaming something. Alas Rune did no such thing. She merely stared at him with those emotionless eyes of hers, watching as he quickly looked away. His face reddening. The action only confirmed what she held in her mind. Yup this man was indeed a-
Pervert.
She didn't even move when he came and placed his cape around her, its length more than dragging on the sandy beach. The girl reached for the cloth, rolling it as she answered. "Parents? Ah. Doc sent me out here on an errand. And I wasn't playing, I was gathering." Finishing her work Rune tied the cape to her waist, thinking that to be the more in-danger spot to worry about. It hung off like a fancy skirt that reached her ankles, opening into a wide slit all the way up to her thigh and closing off just before her waist. Of course Rune hadn't realize what she'd just done, only think herself more 'covered up'. "Thank you." Rune said briefly, "By the way, would you mind helping me get my things back? I can't go back without my satchel."
She knew this was a risk but it was one she'd have to take. Not only was he armed but he was a dragonrider. They trained harder than soldiers. Not to mention even if she did run, the girl could only imagine what might happen to her afterward. Especially if she angered him... I don't know when, but I now know i'll never have to struggle alone Eric would tilt his head at her reaction-- wait, she'd believed him? He'd thought he'd made a good effort to show he was making what people would call a 'joke'. Perhaps his execution was a bit off-- or maybe he came across as too serious. Whatever the case, she seemed to believe him without question. Normally this wouldn't be a problem but with the statement having been as absurd as it was... Wait, she wasn't what someone would call gullible, was she? The young man considered her as she spoke, the way she tied the cloak into a makeshift garment was impressive to say the least, it covered her-- for the most part, a teasing line of skin being revealed along her leg. Eric seemed to be less concerned about that and seemed satisfied that she at least covered herself.
He listened as the girl, for that is what he decided she must be if she were to wrap the cloak in a dress, spoke about a satchel-- not any normal satchel, no, it was an item of utmost importance that she couldn't live without. What on earth could the bag contain that she was so eager to get her hands on it? Her clothes was the first thing to cross his mind.It sounded like she was close with the doctor of the island. This being the case, it was really no surprise she were doing some odd jobs such as gathering seaweed or the like. He'd helped collect things for the doctor before when he was young, treating it more like a scavenger hunt than a job.
"Of course, after all it is my duty to assist where I can." He gave her a small but short lived smile. What kind of a protector would he be if he didn't go out of his way to help the people of the island? Even if it was to assist in helping retrieve runaway clothes or catch a clothesnapper. The more he thought about it, perhaps it was a peeping tom who'd taken her things? He gave her another glance and dismissed the idea. No, that probably wasn't it. Not only did she seem a bit innocent but she also appeared to have terrible luck.
He started walking in the direction the paw prints, nodding for the girl to follow. "So, you work for the doctor then? How do you like it?" He asked, making small-talk to fill the silence.

a toymaker's creation 'Cause these chords are hypnotizing and the whole world's harmonizing so please children stop your crying and just sing along with me! He held little reaction to the 'skirt' she'd created. Good. That meant she did something right (though in truth she merely gave her gender away). Away from her little modesty issue, the girl did not why he didn't answer her questions. Was he lying before? He probably thought her some child too curious to realize the difference between a sense of humor and an honest answer. Quite honestly she felt like such a child at that moment, now realizing that he meant his earlier words as a joke than an answer. Why else wouldn't he answer otherwise?
Rune wanted to shake her head but was content with rubbing the salt off her face. The air felt humid against her skin with the extra layer of salt water and it was quite displeasing. She'd probably smell like fish for the next few days or at least the ocean. Some might like that but this girl in particular did not. It made her feel... off. That and the scent disturbed her nose seeing as how she spent most her time around crushed and dried and live vegetation.
Still that was to be worried about later, the young man having agreed to help her get her belongings back. He mentioned duty which made the girl give an involuntary nod. It was good to see that the dragonriders did their duties of helping the people, it wasn't like they could just fly around all day and play with their dragons. That and they all seemed severely duty-bound in some ways. This one in particular held the stature of someone important within the dragonrider ranks but she also knew her old time friend, Sky; also held similar views. Perhaps it was a sort in inherent though process that was common among the riders? A question to be saved for later.
Rune trotted after the man, careful to keep her bare feet off any sharp object hidden in the sand. Her eyes drifted back to the pile of green she'd collected, listing it as something to come back to when she got her belongings again. Her eyes turning to the sands, following the tracks as she walked quickly to keep up with the much taller youth. "I do." Rune answered his first question with a firmness, "Like? I suppose I like it just fine. I learn many things and Doc has a wide variety of books to fill the time." Rune paused, turning her eyes up toward the armored rider. "How about you? Do you like being a rider?" She asked simply.
While their conversation would go the tracks would lead down the beach into a little rocky area. Sharp rocks would poke out here and there and the sand would slowly but sure dissipate to smooth stone. The wall of the rock rises into a cliff side, the top showing hints of forest vegetation. At first there would be no sign of anywhere the beast could have gone but facing out toward the sea is a small hole that leads in a series of cave tunnels. |

I don't know when, but I now know i'll never have to struggle alone Whether purposeful or not, the young girl seemed to answer him with as few words as possible. Still, he got the feeling it wasn't intentional, perhaps she was just shy or didn't have much to say at all. He thought it resembled himself in a way. Then again, it didn't seem like it was out of somberness, but rather out of something else. She seemed a bit childish, so perhaps she was shy. It made sense to Eric, but he hadn't known her for long enough to make that kind of a connection, after all she hadn't hidden from him or made any indication of being timid. The more he thought of it the more he imagined it must have been the latter-- or to say he wasn't just over-analyzing things again.
The question, he found, was soon returned with another in like. "I suppose I do. It's hard work, but I like helping others." His response was to the point and resembled the short answer he'd received. As they walked he noticed the beach come to an end and sharp stones blocked passage. The young man hesitated as he put a foot on the rocks, putting a hand in front of the girl to stop her. He'd noticed she wasn't wearing boots or anything making her prone to hurting herself without thinking. If what he'd seen already was any indication she'd probably have walked over the stones without a second thought and sliced her foot on one of them.
"I'm going to pick you up." He gave her a warning which came a millisecond after he actually picked her up easily in his arms. Without waiting her for protest he began to walk carefully over the rocks keeping her weight distributed evenly among his arms. He knew how light she was from the first time he'd picked her up, but now that water wasn't a variable he could only be astounded at how light she actually was. What was the doctor feeding this girl or was he feeding her at all?
After a bit of traversing this new terrain he would come across an opening leading underground. The young man stiffened slightly, he glanced to the girl before looking at the cave, staring into the blackness for a moment in thought. "It'll be dangerous for you to go into the cave. Please stay out here and I'll handle things." He set her down on a large rock that she could use as a seat to avoid what protruding rocks were left along the ground.

He gave her a generic answer, one that many a rider or even a soldier would answer. 'Helping others' was the main clue there and was usually what most people went for when they were held responsible for the welfare of others. It was a psychological thing but Rune would not judge. Judgement was for people who felt that their ideas were better for the other and Rune held no such ideals. All she sought was knowledge and this conversation too would be added to her tome of memories.
They walked through the soft sands of the beach, Rune's eyes momentarily looking down every few moments in search of sharp objects that she'd need to beware of. Why did the clothing thief have to kidnap her shoes as well? Were her trousers not enough? It even took her tunic as a bonus too... The girl couldn't help but quiz herself on why just these particular traits, noting that the scent might have something to do with it. Though little did she know that her clothing wasn't the only to be spirited away by the strange creature. Only the dragonrider knew that information.
The beach ended slowly, going from smooth beach to pointy rock. Soon enough Rune found a hand stopping her from going any further. Did he think her a fool to try and traverse those with shoes? Well in honest truth, the girl might have if all that was on her mind was her items. Heck, she would have run and jumped straight into that if only to speed up the process. She always kept some salve for cuts in her satchel along with that tear-powder as a personal habit. She did go on a lot of adventures when she had free time (or when there was no time limit to a job). Yet it seemed that the girl wouldn't need to think of a plan to get through this one as Rune was lifted from her place almost as quickly as the words left the youth's mouth.
The apprentice felt her body stiffen by the sudden action, her arms close together like as if they held an invisible binding. She made no noise across the trap, nor even a squeak when he had plucked her from the ground. Was she not heavy? Of course not. This man was a knight of the dragonriders and trained rigorously with weapons at least ten times her size. If not that large than perhaps five. She still said a quick "Thank you." when he placed her back onto the ground, or rather upon a rock to avoid the danger below. The girl sat there obediently, her empty eyes looking up at the rider as he declared himself to go in alone.
Rune took one look at the cave, then back to him with an almost isn't "Nope." Sure that he wasn't going to take her rejection of this plan seriously the girl proceeded to explain. "That is a limestone cave which means there will be several tunnels throughout it. Unless you know a sure-fire way of getting through that you may as well take me along. Not to mention if you leave me out here alone, what would happen if the beast were to come out while you were in? Shall I fight it barehanded? Strangle it with this cloak?" Rune tugged at the cape, quite obviously trying to make a standing point. Though she wasn't serious when she spoke of fighting back. She had hardly the muscle to take on a wild beast, the best she could handle were some bees and a slippery cliff. But with something that actively might try to eat you, Rune doubted she could run from that. Not to mention she couldn't even run away thanks to the pointed rocks below. Hopefully he'd notice this point as well.

I don't know when, but I now know i'll never have to struggle alone When coming up with a suitable course of action Eric knew there was no one right way to do anything. He'd witnessed this first hand as many of the Dragon Knights used their own intuitive processes by which to solve problems. Some were aggressive and tackled the problem head on, others were more passive, analyzing the problem before coming up with a suitable course of action. He'd come to learn this, and yet when the girl disagreed with his plan he couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. It was only half due to her stubbornness in her decision to come along despite the risks. The fact that she'd been able to identify the type of cave it was and identified such traits without having even set foot in the cave was impressive. When he looked at the cave, all he saw was an accident waiting to happen.
The captain let out a sigh. "I suppose even if I say no you'd probably only wait a few minutes before following behind." He thought out loud to himself. Her following both without light and without anything to defend herself with would be even more dangerous than her just coming in with him in the first place. Why did girls have to be so difficult and obstinate? "Very well. As long as you promise to stay close. I don't want anything to happen to you." He walked over and picked up a thick stick and wrapped a spare piece of cloth around the end of it, first taking out a flask of liquid and pouring it on the cloth letting it be fully absorbed before proceeding. As he did so, he walked slowly to the mouth of the cave. He'd take a flint and steel fire starter from his pouch, lighting the cloth making a makeshift torch.
"It won't last for very long, we should go quickly." The young captain would make his way into the cave, a hand resting on the hilt of the sword that hung at his side.

Rune had stayed silent, letting a paused moment go by before she agreeing with a slight not of the head. If she was forced to stay behind the girl would wait, what - five minutes before heading in? It wasn't that she was impatient, more like she felt naked and severely vulnerable without her satchel. It was like a knight going into a bear's den without armor nor sword, not even a dagger at his side. Though she knew it was probably better for her to stay out in the clear, despite having little in terms of ways of fighting back; then to go romping through a deep dark cave that was no doubt filled with dangerous secrets. Not to mention they still didn't know what sort of creature kidnapped her belongings other than the fact that it had paw prints which meant it had paw pads. Such things could very between an omnivorous fisher to a hot-blooded, red-meat carnivore. Though there was really only one way to find out, and that was to follow the youth down into the moist depths of the cave.
In truth his words were not an actual question directed toward herself but more or less a verbal surrender for himself. No doubt he was thinking something that was undoubtedly offensive but as he had not said it aloud, Rune did not pursue the matter. The girl merely gave another nod with a few words in return to his own worry, "You needn't worry. I don't plan on running on ahead in the dark unless something ends up chasing us that you can't fight off with a sword." Her words were like an idle comment, throwing herself from the rock she sat upon and bouncing her way to the cave mouth on the larger rocks in order to avoid the sharp ones.
Blue eyes peered back to youthful rider, watching as he made a makeshift torch from a dried up piece of driftwood and effectively attaching a spare cloth to it. She watched as he drenched it with no doubt was either alcohol or even some tree sap mixture to spark an instant flame. It could have also been potato oil, she had read that once in a book that if you were dunk your hand in water then potato oil, you could light it on fire without fear of getting burned and yet still appear as if you were holding a flame. It was an interesting thing to be sure, one that Doc would never allow her to act upon even with his supervision.
By the time he had reached the cave and lit his torch, Rune was already beginning to walk in. "Then we should hurry." Rune hastened her step, feeling the texture of the walls with one hand while her steps were light in case of a prickly piece of stone. She did not wait for him to catch up, thinking he'd do so easily with his much longer legs. The cave itself was a tunnel that led deep into a water filled system. At times the organs of the tunnels would either reach out wide or squeeze down into a size that the youth would have to shrink down to, as well as filled with several dead ends. Water covered the floors, ranging from just a skin to going as a high as up to Rune's hips. The walls ranged from scratchy to smooth and there were several holes that led out of the main pathways, though only Rune herself could probably fit through thanks to her armor-less body and tiny stature. There was an echo of water splashing from either in those holes or down another light less pathway. Time was almost non-existent in this place.
