I don't know when, but I now know i'll never have to struggle alone The young man's brows came together a fraction as he listened to Sky's words. It sounded like he'd made some small step to learning the truth of the matter. Eric found himself discerning a contrast from what he'd expected of the confident Sky who had personally pulled him aside for what seemed to be an innocent request to this timid and meek Sky who seemed scared, like a small animal that found herself trapped. He wanted to reach out and calm her, but he felt that he was part of the problem and that even doing so would be a breach in his role as a mentor and a protector. Eric nodded, replying softly.
"You may ask-- but I don't think my answer will help much. There are things I've done I'm not proud of. I've betrayed people's trust and lied trying to save myself the embarrassment of being discovered. I kept digging myself a deeper and deeper hole until finally I was buried alive. I've hurt others without remorse for my actions. There are many things I've done through my life I'm not proud of." The young man fell silent as he considered his words careful before speaking again. "Sky, my father once told me that people are born to chaos. At a young age, we show tendencies toward destruction, it is only through maturation and being taught right from wrong that we develop rules and morality. Our actions may be unforgivable, but anyone can strive for redemption."
He didn't know just how much his words were helping if at all, but it was from what bigger picture he could pain for himself that he was speaking. She hadn't given him a lot to work with, but from what he could piece together it sounded like she'd done something she wasn't proud of, something she carried with her every day knowing there was nothing she could do to change her past. He couldn't pretend to hold all the answers, but what wisdom he had gleaned he felt compelled to share, if even to help her in the slightest.

If he was anyone else. Anyone else! With every word he spoke she found comfort, but she knew she couldn't let it cause her to relax too much. She'd already let enough slip out. If he weren't as good a person as he was he could've had her bound in chains on suspicion alone at that point. But he trusted her, and that just caused her deceptions to hurt even more. But was it deception if she was giving half-truths and avoiding straight up lying? There was a time she might've answered yes to that, when she was a pirate and deception was part of the game, but that was a time past and now she knew the answer all too well.
But Sky gritted her teeth and held it all in. She had to deceive him, didn't she? He seemed so understanding, readily willing to hear her out, but the fact was she couldn't risk it. She'd already risked way too much saying what she had. Her best course of action there and now was to shut down and give him nothing else. It would just come back to bite her. If she told him then everything she had said thus far could be used to sentence her, to send her to the noose where pirates frequently met their end. It was a life she had left, but it would never leave her. She could only make amends, never get rid of her sins.
She turned her back to him for a moment, turning away from the eggs and staring off to the side. Then she paced to the side away from Eric, putting a gap between them, and let herself slide to the ground against a rock. It wasn't very good form, given that they were supposed to be guarding the eggs, but the entire thing was overwhelming and she just needed to sit down at that point. "Are redemption and forgiveness the same thing? One can be earned but the other one was must be given, and even then neither might be deserved," she commented grimly, pulling her knees to her chest as she let a blank expression wash over her face. Shut it out, shut it down, don't let her guard crack anymore, don't let the emotion make her vulnerable.

I don't know when, but I now know i'll never have to struggle alone The young man shook his head, his eyes closing. "Redemption is not the same as forgiveness. Redemption is atonement, an actively seeking to right whatever wrongs you've committed. As far as deserving it... Only you can make that decision." He opened his eyes once more, and gave her a soft smile. "I don't expect you to tell me anything you aren't comfortable with. There are some things people don't want to share, and I'm fine with that. I just don't want to see anyone suffer alone. And it doesn't have to be me, any of the teachers are here for you."
He let out a breath and paced to the opposite side of the eggs away from Sky. Had he pushed her too far? He'd wanted to help, but talking wasn't exactly his strong point. He was much more sure of himself when it came to logic and procedure, matters of the heart were beyond his expertise. Maybe Chandra would be better at this than he. After all, the man seemed to have a more artistic and free vibe rather than the captain who was talking to her now. God forbid he say something that scars the poor girl for life. The thought of that made him inwardly cringe.
He glanced back at the eggs, counting them quickly, giving him time to think. It was her fortune Kedjat wasn't with him today, things might have been a little more stressful if he had. It normally wasn't like the red dragon to let the day pass without some fight or another breaking out, much less making a remark of eating either Eric or some other unfortunate soul. He'd even made comments like that about the other Dragon Knights-- using their bones as toothpicks of more use than their patrols or something to that extent?
He turned his eyes back to Sky, curious about her but refraining from speaking more. He'd already been long-winded enough and expended all the speeches he was going to make today. But... she'd been fairly silent but to make short responses to him. It was hard to read her because of it-- too bad women didn't come with footnotes.

If some part of her had heard him she showed no sign of it. Legs were pulled to her chest and her forehead was resting against her knees, hiding her face behind the curtain that was created by her white hair. Truthfully she heard every word he was saying, but it was getting difficult to process them. There was so much else on her mind, it was so jumbled, so crazy. She'd heard of people comparing their thoughts to a storm but she'd navigated the seas during storms before, she'd much rather be doing that right now.
Or having a drink. A drink would be really nice.
But she had volunteered for this. She had sought him out and asked for the guard duty. She just hadn't expected to be so . . . revealed by the sight of the eggs. They had pierced a hole straight through her defenses, and now she was curled up in the sand doing everything she could to maintain herself, to keep the tears that wanted to break through from doing so. It was pretty much guaranteed that Eric would never do another guard shift with her, she was certain of that. Barely into the shift and she was already a broken down mess.
She had to steel her resolve, collect herself. Several painful swallows followed and she closed her eyes tight, refusing to let herself cry. That would just seal it. Teeth grit and her jaw set. Stupid girl! Get a hold of yourself! You were a fearsome pirate, goddammit! Fearsome might've been an exaggeration, but she was a damn good smuggler and well respected among the actual fearsome pirates. What would they think of you now? It didn't matter. That was a life she had left behind. She was trying to make a new life! She needed to put all that behind her.
Her knuckles were as white as her hair as she gripped her own legs, pushing up. In one awkward motion she climbed to her feet, after several long moments of being balled up, and put on a smile. "I do need to learn to accept the help, to accept that everyone is here for me if I need it. It's just hard. Could we . . . could we perhaps forget this ever happened and just continue watching the eggs?"

I don't know when, but I now know i'll never have to struggle alone Forget? How could he? After everything he'd seen there wasn't any way he could just look the other way and pretend he hadn't seen anything. Then again, perhaps he'd beaten the subject into the ground. He didn't want to agree but he nodded his head anyway still visually concerned at first but managed a small smile of his own. No, he couldn't make it any harder on Sky, she was already going through a lot and she just needed to work this out for herself. No matter how much he wanted to walk her through this, he knew he wasn't the one who had to make that journey.
The more he watched her, the more he realized just how painful this all must have been, even to the point of nearly breaking down. There wasn't any way he could simply ignore this. He'd need to ask her about this again sometime, perhaps when she was calmed down and nowhere near the eggs. For now, the young man walked over to her and sat down next to her, leaning his head back against the wall. And now the real job had begun. The dull job of keeping watch. He had done the job many a time before, but he thought to himself he'd never get used to the lengthy shifts of nothing happening.
He let out a small sigh, feeling himself relax. "And now, we wait." It was a proclamation of the long shift ahead of them. He felt as though he should perhaps say something, spark some kind of conversation to fill the silence, but nothing really came to mind. It was possible that he was over thinking things and that she didn't expect there to be conversation the whole time-- then again, she seemed to be in a bad state and taking her mind off their last conversation might not be as easy.
"So, do you have any crushes?"

Sky looked up as Eric proceeded to cross over to sit down beside her. In a way it really helped to lift a weight off of her shoulders. He was being casual enough that she didn't feel a complete fool for collapsing like she had in the middle of a shift. She was supposed to be guarding the eggs, yet she had become a bundle of emotions. The only way she'd stop an intruder like that would be because they felt it was too awkward to interfere!
Yet the words that left his mouth caught her completely off guard. Her eyes widened and she felt her cheeks heat up in response, but Sky was not one to flinch away with bashfulness. Instead she set her grey eyes on the sand in front of her a shrugged her shoulders. She knew what he was doing, changing the topic so that she wasn't on the same train of thought that had ruined her. But then, perhaps it was worthwhile to entertain that idea. It would mean focusing on something other than her past. "No," she murmured in response, no one in particular coming to mind. She didn't look at others like that often enough to form such feelings, it seemed.
Yet the ridiculousness of the situation struck her suddenly and abruptly. Here she was sitting on guard duty with the Captain of the Dragon Knights talking about crushes now? On impulse, perhaps spurred by the ridiculousness, she let her head rest to the side, resting on his shoulder. "What about you?"

I don't know when, but I now know i'll never have to struggle alone Her answer was short but caught Eric by surprise. She was young, beautiful, and of the age where such things would probably be on her mind and yet here she was saying she didn't have anyone like that? It seemed to him she perhaps wasn't looking too hard, or perhaps she didn't want someone like that. It dawned on him suddenly that perhaps she did but she didn't feel comfortable telling him. Whatever the case was his question seemed to have worked to distract her, even a little. He couldn't help but notice her voice sounded tired suddenly, as though their previous topic had drained all her energy. It was no wonder, emotionally she seemed to have had a number done on her.
The young man suddenly felt something on his shoulder and glanced to see Sky's head resting on him. He felt his neck tense but didn't move, his form frozen as though making even the smallest motion would be catastrophic. What was she doing? Why? It wasn't like the contact was unwelcome, but he felt it breached some level of professionalism demanded from job as both a teacher and captain. He suddenly felt very self-conscious about the way he was acting wondering if he perhaps shouldn't have been so nice to her.
"No, I don't-- I can't. My duty to Woodkeep comes before everything. Even if I had someone like that I wouldn't be able to give her everything she deserved." He spoke a little faster and louder than normal giving him a more decisive tone. That's right, it was for the best to avoid romantic relationships. Something like that would only serve to distract him from his purpose, the goals he'd lay before him. Besides, his father hadn't married and had remained single all his life-- why should he be different? Whatever was good enough for his father was good enough for him.
And yet... here he was...

In such close proximity she could feel him tense up at the gentle contact of her head on his shoulder. She knew she was being extremely unprofessional, and she was probably tarnishing whatever respect he had left for her, but then you might as well go all in, right? It wasn't like a scrap of respect meant much when you broke down on duty in front of the captain himself. Besides, it just felt nice to be close to someone right now, even in the simplest of ways. It felt right for her.
His words, though, reflected his tension. She heard him out and lifted her head just enough to turn and look at him, stormy eyes sceptical and a single brow raised--a partially feigned, partially real incredulous expression. "And here just moments ago you were telling me I could talk to you, not just as my captain and teacher, but as a person. A response like that sounds like something a captain would say," she murmured, lowering her head back down. There was a part of her inside that liked the way he tensed up. Perhaps it was the pirate side of her scoffing at authority, or maybe it was merely a young lady enjoying having some power over a young man.
"Well perhaps you could find a nice woman who doesn't deserve much," she commented, then laughed aloud. "I understand you, though. I've too much already in my heart to consider such matters," she mused wearily, looking down at her hands. "You're a noble type, though, a real honourable person from a strong lineage. Wouldn't it also be your duty to continue your family line?" she wondered out loud, idly, not really expecting an answer from him.

I don't know when, but I now know i'll never have to struggle alone He felt himself relax a little bit against his will as Sky stayed close to him. His face got a little red as she turned to look at him, her face so close to his. He didn't dare to look save for more than a glance-- that turned into a moment as he hesitated on her eyes. She had soft features now that he got a good up close look at her. He forced himself to look away. What was he thinking? He couldn't entertain even the thought. Her words seemed to tease him, to challenge his will.
She wasn't wrong, he had said those words, but she was twisting them and doing a good job of making it fit her design. When her head connected with his shoulder again, he didn't have such an averse reaction as the first time, but that didn't mean he didn't feel completely uncomfortable in this position. They were about the same age, but for some reason he felt guilty. It wasn't like he didn't like it, but he knew it was a bad idea-- and yet he didn't say or do anything to stop her. Well, if it was just this it wasn't that bad was it? Such went the internal debate of the adolescent captain. It was circular and every time he tried to explain it off his mind just kept going back to the principal that he shouldn't encourage this.
"What?" He stammered having been completely unprepared for her last train of thought. Reproduction as a duty? In a way it sounded logical, but it just sounded so carnal that he couldn't accept it. It was embarrassing for him to even think about, how was she able to talk about it with such a straight face? "I think it's far too early for me to start thinking about-- you know. I don't even have anyone like that anyway, remember?" He did his best to divert the subject, "My father adopted me, took me in and gave me my life without having married. I guess I've just never thought about it." He admitted with a small sigh.

When you spent enough time around pirates you grew a little desensitized to such topics. Especially if you were spending enough time around pirates as a young lady just finding her form. Sky had heard it all, both said to her and toward her, or at least she liked to believe she did. There was a lot she was naive to, but the basic idea of sex was by and large not foreign to her at all. Yet the way it made Eric react almost brought a smirk to her lips. It was a welcome distraction on her worn out emotions, so she continued to poke and prod at it.
Plus some part of her liked having this effect on the captain.
Her head remained in place this time--she didn't need to look up to speak to him. In fact she seemed only to make herself more comfortable, leaning the slightest amount of her weight against him. Not enough that it would be overbearing, but certainly enough to be noticeable. Partially it was to make him squirm a little more and partially it was for her own comfort. The neck wasn't meant to stay at an odd angle and by leaning closer to him she was at least able to rest her head properly on his shoulder.
"Woodkeep is a small place and the orphans, fortunately enough, are few. The chances that you'd luck into finding a young boy of vigor and honor as your father did are slim to none at best, yet your line needs to continue, at least in name, no? Besides, you're somewhere around my age, no? These are supposedly our prime years for that stuff, though I wouldn't know much on the topic," she murmured, half teasing and half musing herself. "What traits would you like in a girl, captain?" she added abruptly.

I don't know when, but I now know i'll never have to struggle alone The young man had to restrain himself from retracting as he felt her lean into him, if even just a little. There was a sudden impulse to stand up and put some distance between the two as his gut twisted. She was doing this on purpose, he just knew it. Was it a common reaction she got out of young men? In which case, giving her such responses would only serve to encourage her, wouldn't it? If he didn't react what would she do then? He didn't know, but keeping himself seated and solid in the face of this adversity was perhaps one of the hardest tasks he'd undertaken, even on a job that required him to keep watch of a place for hours at a time.
Her words made sense and from a practical standpoint she was correct, but more than for logical purposes, at least in this subject, he was more focused on his immediate situation. As far as their prime years were concerned, he was certain they wouldn't be able to pass by fast enough. Just thinking about facing this kind of torturous feeling again and again was more foreboding than any adversary he'd crossed blades with to date, even the methodical ruthlessness of his father. To think this were the years to come he had to look forward to!
"Traits?" He breathed, she was prodding at all the personal stuff now, wasn't she? He might as well humor her, there wasn't much harm in her knowing something like that. Then again-- he didn't really know himself what kind of girl he'd want. "Well, hypothetically speaking of course-- I suppose someone who knew how to cook. It might sound generic, but I have no skill in preparing food. She'd be able to take care of the little things that I miss, independent, smart..." He trailed off and shrugged the shoulder she wasn't leaning on. "I don't know-- saying it out loud, I think the girl I'd like would be someone who I just have a connection with."
He gave her head a small shrug. "Now that I've said, I think it's your turn to tell me who your dream guy would be."

Maybe she shouldn't be poking and prodding at the man who was her superior like she was, but Sky was enjoying it. It kept her mind off of other topics, such as herself. Plus the more she talked with him the more she was genuinely interested in the answers to her questions. What did a young man at the top of the world want? She knew how to make a man squirm, like she was doing now, but admittedly she knew very little about their desires beyond the rather crude idea she'd gotten from pirates over the course of the past few years.
She really knew very little of the opposite sex, but that was perhaps par for the course given how young she was when she was swallowed by the world. The minds of males had never been a priority, and still wasn't, for the white-haired rider. However as he answered her question she found herself quite curious what he might say. And then disappointed as his answer wasn't very specific. Someone who could cook? He wanted less a woman and more a mother, it seemed!
Sky scoffed at the thought, but he tossed her question right back at her. She should've expected it to come, but it still caught her off guard. Fortunately she has a quicksilver tongue at times and her response was almost immediate. "Someone noble, honourable. To be honest if I could pick the man I'd marry he'd be too good for me, and I wouldn't deserve him. A just man, who does right by everyone. And can hold his booze . . ." she added the last part almost haphazardly. "And probably someone who's worth a laugh now and then. But mostly just a good heart." Or perhaps a strong heart to make up for my shattered one.

I don't know when, but I now know i'll never have to struggle alone The boy's face tensed a bit as he listened to her description. Honorable, noble, a man who was able to appease everyone-- sounded like she was looking more for perfection than a man. Was there really someone who could live up to such standards? If he was alive, he was probably the most boring person imaginable, probably the civil servant type and be more absorbed in his work than being interested in any relationships. Something about this all sounded familiar, but the young man decided to not read too far into it. "Sounds like a long road ahead for you. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single man who meets all those requirements."
He was suddenly regretting his question. He had spurred this conversation but perhaps this wasn't such a good topic either. With such high standards it was probable she was losing faith in ever finding someone. He reached and put an arm around her giving her a side hug. "If I do meet someone who fits your criteria, though, I'll tell you. I don't know much on this subject, but I do know it's easy to lose heart. You'll find him someday."
He said it confidently enough, but until now he hadn't really given it much thought. There were obviously girls who he felt... drawn to. But after having been around girls and pushing aside his attraction to them it had gotten easier. Granted, said girls weren't resting their head on his shoulder or talking about such personal things. Eric sat silently, suddenly curious what was going through Sky's mind. He couldn't ask her, though, or she'd probably ask him the same thing and he wasn't sure how he'd answer that.
What a peculiar dilemma.

Sky laughed at Eric's sentiment. It was a hearty laugh, a genuine one, and she shook her head idly. "You think me so daft that I'd find such a man? You think me so conceited that I'd believe such a man would fall for me, would return my affections even if he did exist? You asked what traits I wanted, I listed them, but that's merely a list of options. I've never thought much on the subject, I think I just described every girl's dream guy rather than an actual real person," she mused and then giggled. The giggle was followed immediately by a blush as she realized such a girlish sound had escaped her.
She enjoyed the feelings of comfort that came with the side hug, with the sensation of his arm around her. It was what she needed then, affection of some sort, comfort and something to distract her. He was providing all of it for her with relative ease without even realizing it himself.
Her voice became a bit more serious as she thought about the topic. "Honestly I've been so focused on becoming the best I can, on doing my dragon honor by being a worthwhile rider, that I haven't even looked at a guy that way since I joined," she commented softly. "But I suppose if I'm meant to find love it'll happen and otherwise I'll just play it by ear," she shrugged. Was that what fate was? When she had grown up without a mother, but she knew her parents had been in love. Years after she'd been born and her mother had been lost, her father still had that look in his eyes whenever he talked of her, whenever he saw her picture or visited her grave.
That's probably too good for me, Sky thought to herself. "Do you believe in love at first sight?" she asked suddenly.
