Valarie comes across as a happy individual who loves talking with people, enjoys making new friends, and cares for all. She laughs like everyone else, she smiles almost constantly, and is always quick with the jokes. While there doesn't seem to be anything outwardly wrong, Valarie's true nature comes out when she's alone. Truth is, only Choin knows how she is. Deep down, she's a terrified little girl with no confidence in herself. The only thing she gets true joy out of is teaching others about dragons and being around them. Everything else is a formality and a lie. Often time she cries while in bed alone, with only Choin to comfort her. Her inner thoughts are plagued with anxiety and repressed emotions. She relies on Choin to get her through the day, and without her Valarie would crumble into nothing.
Just like everyone, though, she has good days. Valarie is aware of her problems and is actively trying to be better, to not let tiny things get the best of her. She's good at a few things, and she clings to those to make her happy. Her and Choin are great fliers, and she likes to preform new tricks or participate in races when she can, even if she does get nervous. She's a hard worker and when she wants to do something, she's going to do it. Failure might hinder her and spiral her into a saddened heap, but she is constantly getting up, picking herself off the ground (with the ever-supporting help from Choin) and trying again. Not a lot of people realize what goes on in the head of hers because she's always trying to pick people up and make them feel better. She knows what it's like to feel absolutely worthless and does her best to make sure no one ever does.
Sneaking up on Valarie is the easiest thing in the world, but not always the wisest decision. Coming from behind her even without the intention to startle will scare the living out of her. Years of practice and self-therapy has made it to she isn't rendered into a sniveling pile of goo, but she'll still jump. Raised voices (yelling or just below yelling) are enough to make her heart race and her hands shake, but again she has perfected her self-control and doesn't have panic attacks anymore. These knee-jerk reactions are the only sign left of her past life. Moving too quickly near her will make her flinch, turning toward her suddenly might make her cower, but she's always working on it and quick to apologize. Every day is a constant struggle for her to regain her independence, but she is trying and Choin is always there to help her.

family history
Valarie was born to a young couple that owned a farm. For the longest time she believed that they loved her. She remembers being doted on and crooned over, but over the years she has convinced herself she made it all up. Her father was a gambling man and fell into extreme debt with the wrong people. When he couldn't pay and they threatened to take a large percentage of their crops, he did that for a while. However, they ended up unable to feed themselves for some time and he begged the men he owed to find something else to take from them to pay off his debt. They ended up settling on eight-year old Valarie (who was born with a different name she has long forgotten). Her mother protested and cried, but they took her anyway and said that their debts were settled.
Eventually she was sold to a man who owned a different farm several cities away. He renamed her Calla, after the flower. It wasn't such a bad deal, but she ended up missing her parents a lot. When she tried to run away, he caught and punished her. From then on she lived in his cellar, receiving just enough food and water to keep her alive but not satisfy the hunger or thirst she worked up from doing the chores. It was like that for a few years until pirates raided the area. She was kidnapped by them during yet another escape attempt. In a way those pirates rescued her from the cruel farmer, and it wasn't such a terrible deal. At the very least she was treated better than the farmer had and she was fed a whole lot more.
It was like that for a few years. She was nothing better than a slave, but she was a well-fed slave who just had to clean and cook. When she was twenty, the came ashore to an island she had only heard rumors about. She wasn't supposed to go above deck while they were docked, but she could hear the beasts. Despite the consequences should she be caught, she ventured outside. It was against her better judgement, but the curiosity was overwhelming. Once on deck she could see them flying—dragons! The rumors had been true. She had heard the stories when she was little, but had never dreamed that she would be able to see one herself. They were even more beautiful than the stories could have ever told. It wasn't long before she felt something on the fringes of her mind. It was like the wind, but. . . different.
Valarie was nervous being above deck, but she was beginning to hear a commotion and she wanted to see what it was. It had been so long since she had seen anything besides the open sea, and she was getting braver as time went by without her being caught. She made sure no one was watching, then ran to the edge of the ship to see what was going on. There, by the docks was a small procession of dragonriders and their dragons. They were hanging back and carefully watching something. When Valarie peered around, she saw it was a baby dragon, the size of a large pony. Its bright red scales stood out against the water-logged wooden dock and it was making its way swiftly and with purpose toward the ship. And then, it stopped, tilted its head back, and looked up at her. Directly at her.
Her breath caught when she was called out to. Without thinking, she ducked away and scampered back toward her bunk, hiding in a corner. She had been spotted, and now she was going to get into so much trouble. She sat there for what seemed to be ages until she heard voices coming toward her room. She recognized the captain's voice desperately telling someone that the girl (her) was no one important, just a deck hand. The anger he was barely concealing in his voice made her heart race. They were coming for her--the dragonriders and her captain! Her door opened and she prepared herself for the onslaught, but everyone was sushed. The dragonrider in charge told her not to be afraid, and to hold perfectly still. When no rebukes or blows came, she looked up and saw the little hatchling staring at her with curious, ice-colored eyes. The thing barely fit in the tight quarters, but it came in anyway. It squawked and came toward her, then settled down with its head on her legs.
Mine a soft, childish voice declared in her head. Valarie's breath caught and emotion threatened to overwhelm her. Before she knew what was going on, she heard her captain bellowing. She retreated as far into the corner as she could, terrified, but she was quickly surrounded by unfamiliar people who she barely managed to recognize as the dragonriders. They declared that she was no longer allowed to leave the island, and that she was coming with them. Some of them must have realized what she was to the pirate crew, because they put as much emphasis on that as they could. Someone told her that everything was going to be okay now and she was pulled to her feet, the hatchling coiled around her and hissing at anyone who dared come at her with less than honorable intentions.
Somehow they managed to get her and the dragon off of the ship without a fight. Valarie acquaints that to the fact that everyone who wanted her off the ship had dragons and the pirates had—well they had pointy sticks. The most satisfying memory she has of that day (besides the obvious) was the red-faced look of the captain who was losing his precious slave. When they got her alone and asked her name, she made one up from the names she had caught while traveling. The young dragoness and her were impossible to separate after that, not that anyone really tried. The next few years were a blur to Valarie. Her and Choin's bond grew deep very quickly. Both of them discovered their penchant for flying and when it was time, Valarie took up the position as flying instructor to help new riders learn to become one with their dragon in the air. She still fights to shake her demons from her past, but she has all the time in the world.
