Josh had been like this all day. Just lost in thought, really taking the time to consider all he'd been through for the last nearly 4 years... And really wondering if he'd wasted it.
No, he decided. He hadn't wasted a moment here. He had become a better warrior for it... He just wished he could do... More. He was learning a lot, yes, but that adventurous warrior instinct was always there... It called to him.
He opened his eyes to see the waters in front of him at the beach. He'd zoned out again...

This was what Valarie Scovill lived for. There was nothing more freeing that flying. It was true freedom, true weightlessness. A great beast underneath her, muscles rippling below shimmering crimson scales. They were as one, and it was never a dull moment.
Corkscrew, Valarie thought.
That thought had barely left her mind before her magnificent dragon plunged , wings folded neatly against her sides. A single twitch of her finned tail and she was spiraling, spiraling toward the waves hundreds of yards away.
Her wings unfolded slightly, filling with air and slowing the descent just long enough for her to swing her tail and pull up just a tad bit—and then another minor adjustment sent them shooting back up into the sky, forever spiraling in that corkscrew pattern. With a snap, her wings unfurled completely and she twisted once more in the air, turning up and striking a short pose.
Valarie lifted her arms from the harness and leaned back as far as she dared to without unbalancing her dragon partner. They hovered, weightless, for a couple seconds before gravity pulled them down again. Valarie leaned back just a bit more and then Choin, her partner, fell backwards as well into another controlled dive toward the ocean waves frothing beneath them, waiting for one single screw up—waiting to claim either rider or dragon.
But not this day.
Just as the two were about to crash into the waters, Choin snapped open her wings and twisted around so she was flying parallel to the ocean, upside down. Valarie reached out and touched the water’s surface with her fingertips, drawing back after a short dip.
One more adjustment and Choin was upright again, zipping above the water and snaking around waves. The beach came up quickly and Choin tilted her wings ever so slightly, effectively applying the brakes. She pulled up, talons up, and touched down on the ground with a few backbeats of her wings, tail swishing behind her. Sand kicked up into the air, but they settled down and came to a complete stop safely and without incident.
Her heart beating in her chest, Valarie jumped off of her dragon’s back and came around to meet her, embracing her head in a gentle hug. It always gave her such a thrill—the adrenaline pumping through her veins, the feeling of falling. . . it was all so liberating.
Choin lifted her head and turned it toward a spot in the beach, eyes narrowed and lips pulled back in a silent snarl. Valarie gave her a strange look, then turned to follow her gaze.
“It’s just a person,” Valarie whispered. She turned again toward the fellow sitting on the beach and waved her hand to catch his attention—if her grand entrance hadn’t already. “Hello there! Enjoying the beach?”

The wind blew across the face of the young man, brilliant brown eyes opened to stare out at the open sea. Long blonde hair flew around and over his head as the wind was gently, briskly blowing this fine afternoon. The man looked to be about 21 years of age, maybe a little bit older at a stretch. He was unarmored, but the width of the shoulders, the definition of the arms that were shown between the fabrics of his dark blue tunic; seemed to show that he was a warrior of some sort. A strong one too, at that. The handsome features of the blonde haired young man would yield a look of surprise as something came to view in the distance. At first, his hand went to his blade... The greatsword shining brightly in the light of the sun as he almost brought it from it's sheathe. But his shoulders would lower, his guard would return to it's relaxed state as the form came closer. A dragon, with a rider on it... As his eyes adjusted to what was coming toward him, he recognized what seemed to be a female figure riding atop. They would soar over him before she would leap off, coming to meet the ground, and meet her dragon soon after. He couldn't help but smile as he looked over to see the embrace she held with her dragon. A bond people Rider and Dragon... It always warmed his heart, he thought. The woman, after hearing her dragon snarl toward the armed man though, would call over to him. He would smile in response, before speaking. "Of course, fair lady. And yourself?" he asked politely with a wave. Just then, a roar could be heard from the distance. And within seconds, another dragon barreled it's way onto the beach from the air, the blue dragon coming to a landing beside the blonde. Josh would laugh a bit before patting the dragon on the head, pulling him into a small hug. The dragon would let out a few grunts affectionately before he looked over at the other Rider. Josh was a rider after all... And had been waiting for John to return after letting him go for a flight. That was when the young man had gotten lost in himself. His thoughts...

She always got a little nervous when other dragons were involved, unless it was a dragon that Choin knew, like the king’s. That was one of the only dragons she let near Valarie.
Valarie chuckled warmly and pat Choin’s puffed-out chest. “Calm, dear one,” she murmured, striding forward to bring her closer to the other rider. She didn’t much care for shouting, so if they could get within earshot and use their inside voices, all the better for her.
Shouting made her nervous.
“Choin and I always enjoy a flight near this time of the day. I have no classes to teach, so I was giving her more of a challenge than just a leisurely soar,” she explained, tilting her head to look at Choin.
The great red dragon was low to the ground, her belly scales barely grazing the sand. Her long neck was snaked forward around Valarie, ice-blue eyes narrowed ever so slightly. She made no sound, but her lips were drawn back to show teeth. She did not know this boy or his dragon, and she would be damned if he fancied himself her “friend” so soon after meeting. However, Valarie did her best to ignore her. She was always like this.
“The name’s Valarie Scovill. I don’t think I’ve had you in my classes before. . . I am the flying instructor for new riders.” She made the introduction when they were closer—close enough to speak comfortably but not close enough for Choin to lash out should she get aggravated.
